ODU Beats No. 15 Tulsa, 2-1

MONARCHS DEFEAT NO. 15 TULSA IN FIRST C-USA MATCHUP

TULSA, OK—ODU junior Ivan Militar’s (Szeged, Hungary) goal with 17 minutes left in the match lifted the Monarchs (4-2-1/1-0) to a 2-1 victory over 15th ranked and defending C-USA Champion Tulsa (5-2-1/0-1) in the first Conference USA match of the season for both schools and the first ever league match for ODU. This was the second straight, and third nationally ranked team for the Monarchs who tied eighth ranked Maryland last Tuesday night 1-1.

The Hurricanes took the early lead at the 16:45 mark of the first half as Abe Matamoros scored on an assist from Akeil Barrett from about 14 yards out.

ODU got the equalizer at the 34:57 mark of the first half by sophomore Geoffrey Hill (Frisco,TX.)who pumped it past the keeper from about 16 yards out with an assist from sophomore Ryan Condotta (Keller,TX.).

The game winner came at the 73:39 mark after a foul. Militar made the kick to give the Monarchs the win.
Shots were even, 14-14 and ODU had four corner kicks to Tulsa’s three. The Monarchs senior keeper Sean Stowe (Midlothian, VA.) who had six saves against Maryland, came up with a career high seven tonight. Tulsa’s Jake McGuire made six saves for the Hurricanes.

The Monarchs return to action next Friday when they host the Kentucky Wildcats at 7:30 as part of a C-USA soccer doubleheader with the Lady Monarchs who play ECU at 5:00.
