BERKELEY – Stefano Bonomo scored twice to lead California to a 4-1 rout of Duquesne in the opener of the Cal-Stanford Tournament on Friday at Edwards Stadium. Kyle Lunt and Tony Salciccia also netted goals for the Golden Bears (4-2-1).

The Dukes' record fell to 3-6-0 after the nonconference match.

“Today’s game was well played by both teams,” Cal head coach Kevin Grimes said. “I thought both teams also worked extremely hard, and it was a really good game. Our guys did a good job of playing a complete game.”

In a relatively tight first half, Cal took the lead at 39:55, when redshirt freshman midfielder Tyler Simkins assisted on Kyle Lunt’s second goal of the year. The senior forward slid the ball underneath Duquesne goalkeeper Evan Kozlowski from close range to give the Bears a 1-0 advantage.

Cal, which outshot the Dukes, 6-2, in the first half, took that lead into halftime.

Some nice passing set up Cal’s second goal, with sophomore midfielder Seth Casiple playing the ball to junior defender Ryan Neil, whose cross found Bonomo deep in the DU box. The sophomore forward tapped the ball past Kozlowski to give Cal a 2-0 advantage at 49:00.

Just 30 seconds later, a Cal foul led to a Duquesne penalty kick that Joshua Patterson converted at 49:30. That left the score at 2-1.

At 51:19, a DU foul in the box led to a Cal penalty kick, that senior midfielder Tony Salciccia stuck past Kozlowski to make the score 3-1.

Bonomo scored from close range after another Casiple assist to cap the scoring at 61:50 and give Cal its 4-1 result.

Ultimately, the Bears outshot Duquesne, 20-5. Sophomore goalkeeper Kevin Peach made three saves for the Bears before giving way to junior goalie Robby Gogatz at 80:32, though DU did not record a shot in the last 10 minutes. Kozlowski made seven saves in 90 minutes.

The Bears have been on a tear offensively of late, scoring 13 goals and allowing just one over the last four games. The only blemish over that span was a 0-0 double-overtime tie with San Francisco on Sept. 16.

“If we keep playing Cal soccer, playing as a unit and keep the ball moving, we’ll keep finding ourselves scoring a lot of goals,” Salciccia said. “We’re definitely on a good scoring roll.”

Cal closes the Cal-Stanford Tournament on Sunday, Sept. 23, when they play host to Loyola Marymount at noon. The match will mark the Bears’ second appearance on the Pac-12 Networks.

In the only other match in the Cal-Stanford Tournament, LMU – despite being outshot 29-13 – stunned the Cardinal to win 2-1 in overtime on Friday in Stanford, Calif.
