Canisius Falls in Double Overtime

September 6, 2013

Senior goalkeeper Megan Tock had a career-high 15 saves, but the Canisius College women’s soccer team couldn’t outlast Detroit (2-2-1) and fell 2-1 in double overtime Friday at the Demske Sports Complex. The loss drops Canisius’ record to 1-4-1 on the season.

Tock’s 15 saves bested her previous career high of 12 from Aug. 31, 2012 at Buffalo. The only person to get by Tock was Kaitlyn Quarrell, who tallied both Titan goals.

“[Tock] was unbelievable tonight,” said assistant coach Caitlin Long. “I was very happy with her intensity throughout. She’s a natural leader for us and it showed tonight.”

Canisius rallied from a 1-0 deficit after giving up a goal in the fifth minute, when junior forward Mallory Illsley took a shot from the left side 18 yards out and beat Titans’ keeper Martha Dunbar in the upper right corner. Illsley’s strike tied the game at one in the 31st minute.

“We switched to a new formation today,” Long said. “We went from a 3-5-2 to a 4-4-3 and it really helped us get forward. The midfielders really helped out and we were able to get more going offensively.”

The game would remain tied for 77 minutes, before Alyssa Riley’s through ball led to a break-away for Kaitlyn Quarrell, who ended the contest in the 108th minute.

Canisius will now make its final road trip before conference play, when the Griffs head to Northern Kentucky on Sunday, Sept. 8.  Kickoff is scheduled for noon.

GAME NOTES: This was the Griffs’ second meeting with the Titans. Canisius is 0-2-0 in the series… Tock’s 15 saves nearly doubled her season total, having recorded 22 in the four games she’s played in prior to Friday’s contest… With her goal, Illsley now has four points on the season, which is already a career high. She recorded three as a freshman and two as a sophomore… Sunday’s matchup with Northern Kentucky will be the second meeting between the two programs. The Norse beat Canisius 2-0 in the season opener last season.
