The TeamRank National Championship is a unique rankings setup that only includes team performance from the current season. It begins with events in August and ends with final events in July, at which point a new competition begins and the slate is again wiped clean. Each ranking is only for that August to July season.

Count the Birmingham United 93 ECNL Girls among the teams who are big fans of the Elite Clubs National League.

As inaugural members of the highly competitive league, Birmingham United has continued its growth as a national powerhouse while seeing the kind of player development that only comes from playing with the best teams in the country.

“The team has come a long way in terms of understanding soccer values, having respect for the game and being able to step up and prove they can play with anyone,” said girls’ coach Andrew Brower whose U18 team is No. 1 in our South Region TeamRank ranking. “For us it’s been a dramatic difference in the quality of games and allowed our players to be more consistent on a high level.”

Consistent is a good way to describe the U18 Birmingham United girls, who are eight-time Alabama State champions.

They’re an athletic bunch that knows how to get forward and create opportunities. Now finishing those opportunities might be the difference between, say, just a fairly successful postseason or a national championship this year.

Leading the charge for southern girls is Laura Lee Smith, a standout defender who can also get forward and is regularly one of the team’s top goal scorers. Smith is heading to Alabama next year.

Joining her there will be attacker Jana Simpson, another standout. Megan Collins and Mary Underwood successfully patrol the midfield while forwards Iyani Hughes and Courtney Hurt are part of a potent rotation.

Other top girls’ teams in today’s South Region TeamRank are U17 Birmingham United SA BUSA 94 ECNL, U16 Hurricane FC 95 Shubert, U15 Birmingham United SA 96 ECNL and U14 Louisiana Fire 97 Blue RPL.

On the boys’ side we have U13 Vestavia Hills SC 98 Steamers Black, U14 Brentwood SC 97 Premier, U15 Brentwood SC 96 Elite, U16 Brentwood SC Premier, U17 Tulsa SC 94 Black and U18 Brentwood SC 93B Premier.
