Hornets Prepare For Faulkner Exhibition Game

August 13, 2014

The Alabama State soccer team CONTINUES to hit the field focusing on getting the team fit and prepared for its season opener on Friday, August 22.

"We are certainly ahead of where we were last year," said head coach Jodie Smith about the first week of practice. "The depth has surprised us and has worked in our favor. Our newcomers have really came in, ready to work with the returning players leading the way. "

Leading up to the exhibition match against Faulkner, the team has focused on BECOMING stronger in the backfield.

"Last year, we gave away some games because our defense," Smith said. "Not just in the back but our overall team defense. We want to avoid the late breakdowns that gave us problems last season. Our exhibition game will give us the opportunity to see them in live action and see how well they've progressed."

Another main focus is conditioning, with it being so hot.

"We're acclimated now since we've been out here a week, but the conditions are tough," Smith stated. "We are making sure that they stay hydrated and are eating properly. The training staff, as well as the facilities crew is taking good care of us."

With an exhibition match being only four days away, Smith continues to look at the difference combinations of where everyone will fit.

"I'd like to see if we can maintain our shape and make the right decisions to defend in the back during our season opener," Smith mentioned.

Kickoff for the Hornets' exhibition match against the Eagles is set for 4 p.m. ADMISSION to all ASU home soccer contests is free.  Following the match at 6 p.m., members of the ASU cross country, football, soccer and volleyball teams will sign autographs, as fans can pick up 2014 schedule posters.
