Three first-half goals in a 13-minute span set the U.S. U17 MNT on course for a 3-1 win over Trinidad & Tobago at the Concacaf Championship.
The U.S. attack burst to life from the 11th minute to the 24th, supplying plenty of offense to make it two wins from two games at the continental competition.
Micah Burton, Paulo Rudisill and Taha Habroune provided the goals for the United States, and the relatively quick outburst stood up over the 90 minutes.
Just a shade over 10 minutes into the game, Burton showed quick reflexes to open the scoring. Habroune had the ball in space just inside the right side of the penalty box. His low, driven cross deflected off a defender, and Burton made the darting run to deflect the ball into the back of the net.
Sawyer Jura setup Rudisill just three minutes later. The Portland Timbers Academy left back made a darting run into the box, which was spotted by David Vazquez. Jura a touch away from the defender and towards the end line, and fired home a cross that found the feet of Rudisill.
The third goal of the first half came from a burst down the right side of the U.S. attack. This time it was right back Aiden Harangi that served it up for Habroune. A low cross from the right wing wasn’t cleared, and Habroune was on hand to score his second goal of the tournament.
Trinidad & Tobago surged to life in the second half, seeing more of the ball and creating chances from set pieces. Goalkeeper Adam Beaudry guided a shot just wide in the 69th minute as the Soca Warriors looked for a foothold in the game. That pressure would pay off in the 78th minute when Derrel Garcia volleyed home for T&T to cut into the lead. The livewire winger nearly added a second a minute later, but Beaudry saved well.
The U.S. back line would hold firm after that brief wobble, securing the full points. They finished with a 26-8 advantage on shots, with Chris Aquino and Keyrol Figueroa both having efforts saved by goalkeeper Ailan Panton.
Group play for the U.S. finishes with a game against Canada on Wednesday at 8 p.m. EST.
U.S. Lineup: Adam Beaudry; Sawyer Jura, Stuart Hawkins, Christian Diaz, Aidan Harangi (Adrian Gill); Pedro Soma, Taha Habroune, Paulo Rudisill (Keyrol Figueroa); David Vazquez (Ezekiel Soto), Micah Burton (Cruz Medina), Christopher Aquino
