Shak Adams Named ASUN Player of the Week

October 10, 2016

LAKEPOINT, Ga. – Following a week in which he scored the first two goals of his career and helped lead the #12 FGCU men’s soccer team to an eighth-straight win, freshman Shak Adams has been named ASUN Player of the Week, as announced Monday by league officials.

The honor for Adams (Antioch, Tenn./Cane Ridge HS) also marks the fourth-straight week that FGCU has had the ASUN Player of the Week, the first time in conference history one school has won four-consecutive awards. Albert Ruiz (Barcelona, Spain/ CE L’Hospitalet/UE Cornella) won the award Sept. 19 and Oct. 3, and Arion Sobers-Assue (Miami, Fla./DeMatha Catholic HS) claimed the honor Sept. 26.

With its nation-best winning streak in jeopardy Tuesday night at FIU, Adams – who entered the match as a substitute – scored twice in a seven-minute span to turn a 1-1 contest into a 3-1 FGCU lead and ultimately a 4-1 victory.

His goal in the 70th minute was the first of his career and stood up as the eventual game-winner. Off a corner kick, the ball was played to the back post, sent back into the middle of the box and eventually on to the head of Adams, who sent it just inside the right post.

His second strike came after displaying deft dribbling to navigate his way near the top of the 18. Adams delivered a right-footed shot back across his body and past the outstretched right arm of the diving FIU keeper.

The goals for Adams were part of a stretch of just over 16 minutes in which FGCU utilized the most lethal offensive attack in college soccer to score four times after attempting just one shot on frame through the opening 65 minutes of the match.

After beginning the season 0-2-1, FGCU has won the aforementioned eight-straight games – the longest winning streak in the nation by two and tied for the longest in program history. The Eagles’ #12 ranking is the highest of any team in FGCU’s Division-I history (since 2007-08), and the Green and Blue lead the country in goals (35, six more than any other team) and points (98, 10 more than any other team).

Adams and the Eagles had their match at Jacksonville Saturday postponed due to Hurricane Matthew. FGCU is scheduled to return to the pitch at home against I-75 rival USF on Tuesday, Oct. 11, at 7 p.m. The Bulls began the season ranked #17 and have received votes in the national polls most of the year. The highly-anticipated contest is the first of a four-game homestand for the Green and Blue. Tickets to see the high-flying Eagles are still available and can be secured by logging on to FGCUTickets.com.
