UC Davis drops I-80 matchup at No. 12 Cal
Women’s soccer will return home to face Pacific in Friday afternoon’s 4 p.m. contest
BERKELEY, Calif. - UC Davis more than held its own in Sunday’s non-conference match at No. 12 Cal, but it was the Golden Bears’ success on set plays that helped them defeat the Aggies by a 4-0 score.
Women’s soccer falls to 3-4-1 while Cal improves to 6-2 this season, and 7-1-1 in its last nine matches at Goldman Field.
The first goal of the match took place in the 21st minute; for the remaining 24 minutes of the half, the Aggies battled the Bears step-for-step, and gave Cal a strong challenge.
Less than two minutes after the second half started, UC Davis’ deficit doubled when Cal capitalized on a penalty kick. The Golden Bears tacked on another two goals in the 63rd minute, and with 11 seconds remaining; as was the case with their first two goals, nether one of the last two were scored during the flow of the game. All four were scored on set opportunities: a corner, free or penalty kick.
Friday’s 4 p.m. match vs. Pacific is the last home event before Big West play. After the Aggies face the Tigers, the team’s next three matches will take place on the road when UC Davis visits San Francisco, Saint Mary’s and CSUN, in its league opener.
