WVU Plays to Second-Straight Draw
MORGANTOWN, W.Va. (September 6, 2012) – Despite 41 shot attempts, the West Virginia women’s soccer team failed to find the back of the net more than once, playing to a 1-1 draw with visiting Duquesne Thursday night at Dick Dlesk Soccer Stadium.
Trailing 1-0 at the half, the Mountaineers tied the match in the 48th minute on a goal from forward Kate Schwindel. Forward Kelsie Maloney played a short pass to the top of the box where Schwindel drove a ball into the upper right corner for her third goal of the season.
The Mountaineers (2-3-2) had plenty of chances in every period, including 19 in the second half. WVU’s 41 shots are the fourth-most in school history, and most since September 3, 2006, when the Mountaineers defeated Binghamton.
Duquesne (2-3-1) finished with 12 shots, led by Paige Maloney’s five attempts. Maloney gave the Dukes a 1-0 lead in the 38th minute, finding the back of the net on a breakaway up the middle.
WVU also held a 13-1 edge in corner kicks.
