October 21, 2009
New Britain, Conn. - The Long Island University(w) women's soccer team scored a second half goal to earn a 1-1 draw at Central Connecticut State on Sunday afternoon at CCSU Field in game played in cold, rainy conditions. Freshman Katie Egan (Hanover, Mass.) scored her first career goal to move the Blackbirds to 6-7-1 on the season and 2-4-1 in the Northeast Conference.

Central Connecticut State (7-6-2; 5-0-1 NEC) got on the board first in the 66th minute when Lauren Salvia took a feed from Brittany Jackson at the right corner of the 18-yard box. Salvia sent her shot to the upper left corner of the goal giving the Blue Devils a 1-0 lead.

LIU managed to level the score five minutes later when Egan took a pass from junior Caitlin Meadows (Brookdale, Calif.) and made a move to beat the goalkeeper at the top of the box and put her shot into the unguarded goal to make it 1-1. The Blue Devils narrowly missed taking the lead in the 78th minute when Jillian Cipriano hit the post and Brittany Emin's rebound sailed just wide. Emin had another shot in the 85th minute, but freshman Jennifer Bannon (East Providence, R.I.) made the save to send the game to overtime.

In the overtimes, the Blackbirds outshot the Blue Devils, 3-0, but were unable to find the game-winner. Senior Aly Hanson (New Milford, N.J.) sent a shot wide in the 99th minute and followed in the second overtime with a shot that was stopped in the second overtime. Senior Kim Bishop (Valley Stream, N.Y.) had a follow-up attempt in the second extra period that missed wide.

CCSU held a 13-8 advantage in shots, but both offenses put three shots on goal. Bannon finished the day with two saves, while Caity Casey made a pair of stops for the Blue Devils.

The Blackbirds return to action on Friday, Oct. 23, to host Fairleigh Dickinson for a 6:00 p.m. kickoff. The match will mark the start of a three-game homestand at LIU Field..
