Navy men beat Wofford
September 3, 2010
ANNAPOLIS, Md. -- David Jackson scored on a penalty-kick goal with no time left in the first half, then Dave Arnold and Sam Miller scored goals 10 minutes apart to lift the Navy men's soccer team to a 3-1 victory over Wofford in the season opener for both teams.
Navy improved to 1-0-0 on the season, while winning its second straight season opener. Wofford which won last year's SoCon Tournament and reached the NCAA Tournament, falls to 0-1-0 on the season.
"We really had to battle tonight. Wofford is a very good team. We fell behind early and we were fortunate enough to get a goal right at halftime," said Navy head coach Dave Brandt. "You can attribute it to the fact that we kept playing and when you do that, sometimes good things happen. We played much better in the second half. It's a good win for this team, but obviously, there is still miles and miles to go."
Wofford got on the board first in the 14th minute when Wilson Hood barely got a head on a Bryan Eddy cross, but got enough of the ball to redirect it through traffic for a 1-0 Wofford lead.
Navy then got the break it needed when it got on the board right at the halftime break after a flurry in the Wofford box. Sophomore David Jackson (Forest, Va.) found himself alone on the right slot, gathering in a rebound off a blocked shot, when he sent his shot towards the net with just two seconds left on the clock. Wofford's Eddie Nam was called for a handball in the box, giving Navy a penalty shot with no time left on the clock.
Jackson was given the opportunity to take the shot and calmly slid the ball inside the low, left post to tie the game at one in the 45th minute. The goal was Jackson's second career tally.
The Midshipmen then broke the game open in the first 20 minutes of the second half.
Freshman Dave Arnold (Baltimore, Md.) tallied his first career goal in the 56th minute with an assist by classmate Blake Busse (San Diego, Calif.). Busse played a cross from the right wing that Wofford goalkeeper Andrew Drennan got a fingertip on, but deflected to Arnold, who deposited the ball into the top of the wide-open net for a 2-1 Navy advantage.
The Mids then added an insurance goal 10 minutes later, when freshman Patrick Sopko (Gloucester, Va.) connected with Sam Miller (Tulsa, Okla.) in the 66th minute. Sopko kept the ball on the right wing with a great individual effort and slid a low pass to a sliding Miller, who trickled the ball inside the left post for a 3-1 margin.
The score would remain the same for the remainder of the match.
Wofford outshot Navy, 11-10, but the Mids had a 7-4 advantage in the second half. Wofford had eight corner kicks to Navy's zero.
Freshman Aaron Dupere (Royal Palm Beach, Fla.) earned his first career win with a four-save effort in goal.
The Mids will host VMI on Saturday night at the Glenn Warner Soccer Facility, beginning at 7:00 pm. Tickets are available by calling 1-800-US4-NAVY or before the game the GWSF ticket window.
