EMMITSBURG, Md. – Junior goalkeeper Alicia Miller (Warwick H.S./Lititz, Pa.) earned the sixth shutout of her college career by making three saves as Mount St. Mary’s University (2-2-1) earned its second win in the last three games with a 1-0 non-conference victory over Towson University (2-2-1) at the Mountaineers’ Waldron Family Stadium on Tuesday evening.

The loss snapped the Tigers’ three-game unbeaten streak and was their first setback since a 3-2 verdict against Loyola in the season opener on August 21.

“We did a good job defensively in limiting The Mount’s opportunities, but we weren’t able to break them down in the offensive end tonight,” Towson Coach Greg Paynter said. “We had a lot of possession, but couldn’t get behind their defense.

“This was a game where we didn’t execute,” Coach Paynter added. “If we had executed on the offensive end, it would have been a lot easier for us. Give Mount St. Mary’s credit. They battled hard tonight.”

The Mountaineers took a 1-0 lead in the 24th minute when freshman midfielder Keriann McGettigan (Cinnaminson H.S./Cinnaminson, N.J.) headed in a corner kick by senior defender Kaitlyn Chambers (Notre Dame H.S./Knowlton, N.J.) from inside the penalty area. It was the first goal of McGettigan’s career.

With 18:33 remaining in regulation, the Mountaineers had an opportunity to increase their lead to 2-0 lead on a penalty kick after freshman forward Jackie Corley (Bishop McNamara H.S./Bowie, Md.) was fouled inside the goal area. But, the penalty kick by sophomore midfielder Kelly Baker (Cinnaminson H.S./Cinnaminson, N.J.) sailed high.

The Tigers, who outshot Mount St. Mary’s by a 12-6 margin, had several chances late in the second half to tie the game, but Miller and the Mount defense held off the Tigers for the victory.

Junior goalkeeper Jocelyn Papciak (Atholton H.S./Columbia, Md.) made two saves in the loss for the Tigers.  

The Tigers, who are in the midst of playing four games in nine days, will continue their nine-game road trip this weekend with a pair of games at the Navy Invitational. After facing Manhattan on Friday afternoon, the Tigers will play against Charleston Southern on Sunday afternoon.

“We need to execute on Friday and come out with a bigger purpose,” Coach Paynter said. “We were there athletically and defensively tonight, but we weren’t there technically and mentally in the offensive end.”

The Mountaineers will travel to Longwood on Friday night.
