PROVIDENCE, R.I. – Michael Fucito recorded a goal and an assist and Alex Chi earned two assists to propel Harvard to a 4-1 victory at No. 24 Brown on a cold Saturday night at Stevenson Field. Andre Akpan, Kwaku Nyamekye and Baba Omosegbon also tallied goals for the Crimson, while freshman goalkeeper Austin Harms made five saves for his third consecutive Ivy League win.
With the win, Harvard improves to 6-3-0 overall and 3-0-0 in the Ancient Eight, while Brown falls to 8-3-1 and 2-1-0 in conference action.
"Tonight's game was a lot closer than the result," said Jamie Clark, the Virginia and James Welch Head Coach for Harvard Men's Soccer. "When you take your chances, you win the game. We survived a bunch of quality scoring chances by Brown early and had a great attitude."
Early on, Harvard's defense survived a barrage of chances by Brown, as the Bears managed the first eight shots, including three on goal. Harms kept the game scoreless with three solid saves, including two on headers inside the box, in the first 18 minutes of action.
The Crimson's first shot on net for the game was a big one, as Akpan tallied his fourth goal of the season on a kick from the left side of the box. Harvard gained control of the ball on a Brown turnover in the Bears' zone and immediately set up its offense. Chi grabbed a bouncing ball and quickly pushed it ahead to Akpan for the score at 25:00.
Chi collected his second assist of the night at 41:38 when he tipped a pass to Nyamekye in front of Brown goalkeeper Jarrett Leech. Nyamekye lined up the pass and blasted a shot into the right corner of the goal, extending Harvard's lead to 2-0.
The Crimson trailed in shots, 9-6, at the break, but led in corner kicks, 3-2. Harms had three saves in the first stanza.
Five minutes into the second, Akpan almost scored his second of the game, but his header from five yards out was pulled in by Leech. Brown followed with a strong shot by David Walls that went just to the right of Harms and out of play. Moments later, Harms made a diving stop on a kick from TJ Thompson from the center of the box.
At 63:52, Fucito gave the Crimson a 3-0 advantage after taking a pass from Adam Rousmaniere. Fucito put the ball into the bottom left side of the net for his team-leading seventh score of the season.
The Crimson stretched its lead to 4-0 on Omosegbon's first career score at 67:48. Fucito was credited with the assist as he chipped the ball ahead to Omosegbon, who managed to put the ball past a diving Leech.
Brown managed a goal with only 53 seconds remaining as Austin Mandel blasted a shot in the Crimson goal after Darren Howerton hit him with a pass.
Harvard trailed in shots, 16-11, for the game, but had six shots on goal, compared to five for Brown. The Crimson also controlled corners, 7-5.
Harms played the first 83:59 in net for Harvard, making five stops without allowing a goal. Joseph Alexander saw action for the final 6:01. Leech had two saves for the Bears for the game. The Crimson's four goals represented the most the team has tallied this fall.
