A player should want the ball at all times
March 24, 2011
If you don’t absolutely love having the ball at your feet, or controlling a possession with confidence and poise, by the time you leave the Indiana Girls’ Soccer Camp – you will.
Coach Mick Lyon has spent the last nine seasons injecting the Indiana program with a brand of soccer that breeds passion and excitement, and he’s sharing this enthusiasm with young aspiring players during his summer camp season, beginning June 26-29 with an overnight session on the Indiana campus for prospective college women’s players.
Coach Mick Lyon
“The best part of the game involves having the ball,” Lyon said. “You should be comfortable receiving the ball at all times and we establish confidence in a player with multiple repetitions on the pitch. By the end, a player should be wanting the ball all the time.”It’s indicative of the way the Hoosiers play the game as they relish each possession with the utmost self-assurance.
But this eventful camp is about much more than training and instruction. It’s an opportunity for a young player to get a firsthand look at being a student athlete at the college level. From staying in the dorms, to interacting with current Hoosiers players, campers will get a feel for Indiana’s family atmosphere.
“This camp is a vital part of the relationship between the coaching staff and players,” Lyon said. So much of the game involves that emotional tie the player has with the school, and developing that is a big part of the college experience.”
And for those players who may not ultimately end up with Indiana as their ultimate destination, a great collection of other coaches from all levels will be present to evaluate players and provide them with multiple options to fit their career.
It’s all part of an event that’s instilling confidence and direction to future college players.
