2018 Boys IMG Academy Top 150 Winter update
The IMG Academy Top 150 rankings update for boys in the 2018 graduating class is out today, with forward Andrew Carleton retaining the top spot once again. Carleton entered U17 Residency this month, along with more than a few others in this group. In the first international outing with this new U17 MNT cycle, Carleton scored in each victory at the Aegean Cup in Turkey.
Two others climbing amongst the top ten are DC United midfielder Chris Durkin and St. Louis Scott Gallagher center forward Josh Sargent. Both entered the U17MNT Residency program with Carleton for the spring semester. Durkin, whose home club is DC United, is considered one of the top MLS prospects in this class, and was a bright spot in the U17’s loss to England at the Nike International Friendlies in December. Sargent is thriving with the U17 MNT, having scored the game winner in their recent match against the Netherlands, and spent his fall semester with SLSG’s U16 Development Academy, where he scored nine times in just six matches.

Pateadores forward Kyle Holcomb, Braddock Road YC defender Connor Hester, and Dix Hills Hurricanes center back Matthew Barresi are some of the players that climb the ranks with this update. Holcomb is the current leading scorer in the U15/U16 Development Academy with 17 goals in 22 matches, and is well on his way to a third consecutive 20 goal season in Development Academy play. Hester was selected an all-star at the 2015 ODP Winter Interregional in Florida. Barresi was also selected to the Interregional All-Star roster, and helped his team to a first place finish in the US Youth Soccer National League Red Division. Barresi’s defense surrendered just four goals in seven matches in National League play, earning an automatic berth in the 2016 USYS National Championships.
There are more than a couple of players new to the rankings this month, including Georgia United forward Zyen Jones, IMG Academy midfielder Akil Watts, Shattuck St. Mary’s defender Alessandro Milesi, Crew Soccer Academy Wolves forward Farai Mutatu, and Fewster FC defender Nick Richardson. Jones earned a best xi nod from TopDrawerSoccer.com for his performance at last summer’s U14 DA Showcase, and entered the U17 MNT Residency program for the spring semester. Watts entered Residency as well, but merely had to cross campus to do so, after moving to IMG from Indiana in 2015. Milesi is a starter on the Shattuck St. Mary’s U18 DA team, and was recently selected for January’s U18 MNT camp. Mutatu has seven goals in 10 starts this season for Crew Wolves U16s, while Richardson is part of a back line that has just one loss in National League play.
In addition to the IMG Academy 150 update, we have made key changes to the regional rankings which will be unveiled throughout the week. On Friday we will highlight some of the regionally ranked players. Some of the additions include Indiana Fire forward Matthew Boberg, Bethesda-Olney defender Ben Severe, Dallas Texans midfielder/forward Tyler Shea, Hooever Phantoms midfielder Christopher Richards, and many more.
As far as how we arrive at the rankings, it’s no simple task.
We keep a national database of players as the starting point for our rankings (if you’re not in it, enter a profile here).
We track an extensive list of selections to national team camps and other honors including USSF Development Academy (Boys), ECNL (Girls), and U.S. Youth Soccer National League event and season awards, plus U.S. Soccer Training Centers, ODP, id2 and other player identification programs.
From there we look at additional signs of top player performance in a club environment, with the help of an extensive network of observers around the country. The priority here is for club, college, national team and other select team coaches on the ground, but especially when we can gain corroborating opinions. The more layers of opinions we can accumulate the better, as our role is primarily to aggregate those viewpoints, rather than making our own determination as to a player’s quality.
As a matter of policy, we never share which coaches said what about whom so that coaches will be freer to share their assessments. Another policy is that parents’ opinions about their own children are not considered, but you are welcome to provide feedback about honors and other details that may be of help to us in keeping their profiles up to date as well as our challenge of sifting through thousands of players nationwide. That kind of data can be helpful, but the: “How can you not have rated my kid? He is awesome” communique, while compelling, will be consigned to the virtual trash.
In the end, there’s always some level of subjectivity about players, because after all, how good someone is relative to someone else is largely a matter of opinion, but we do our best to make our rankings as educated an opinion as can be.
The rankings will be updated three times per year. Keeping current rankings for 8 classes of 150 players each is no small task, and it is counterintuitive to think the rankings would change daily or weekly. We will announce each update.
So that’s it. You can see the newest version of the rankings here.
