Academy Recap: Rivalry matchups
EAST
Georgia United U18s were able to grab a win over Orlando City in the game’s final minute, as Edan Mendoza’s 90th minute goal proved to be the winner in a 3-2 game. Georgia was able to overcome two goals by UCF-bound forward Richard Prestridge. United’s U16s made it two wins from two, as Cal Jennings and Matt Morgan powered the offense in a 3-2 victory.
The Capital Area RailHawks Academy U18s emerged as the winning side against North Carolina rivals Charlotte Soccer Academy, besting them by a 2-1 score. Donald Mason and William Ramirez scored in the win. The two U16 sides drew 1-1.
A Preston Firnstahl goal in the first minute of the game proved to be enough for Virginia Rush U18s, as they held on for a 1-0 win against Baltimore Bays Chelsea. It was a good day for the Virginia side, as the U16s came away 3-2 winners thanks in part to Victor Falck’s goals in the 70th and 89th minute.
Drew Mahoney and Noah Blodget scored on either side of halftime as PA Classics U18s downed the Richmond Kickers 2-1. The PA side also secured a win in the U16 game, winning 3-0.
The Montreal Impact U18s opened the floodgates against MLS counterparts New England on Sunday, getting five past the Revolution in a 5-0 victory.
PDA U18s maintained their perfect start to the 2013-14 season, edging a tight encounter with D.C. United by a 2-1 score. The MLS Academy side did manage to come away with the full points in the U16 game, winning U16 over the New Jersey powerhouse. Owen Marshall scored the winner for D.C. in the 45th minute.
WEST
The Seattle Sounders made the trip north to face the Vancouver Whitecaps, always an intense affair. Kenneth Sweet provided the winning strike for the Sounders in the U18 matchup, as Seattle emerged victorious 2-1. It turned out to be Seattle’s day, as the U16s also won, led by Ryan Schaefer’s second half goals in a 3-0 victory for the Sounders.
The youth SuperClasico yielded goals aplenty, as Chivas USA and the LA Galaxy Academy sides squared off in Carson, Calif. There was little to separate the U18 sides, as they drew 1-1, but LA’s U16s came away big winners. Adrian Vera scored twice, but it was an offensive surge from LA, which won by a 6-0 score line.
Crossfire Premier eased to a pair of Saturday victories over visiting San Juan Soccer Club. The U16s defeated San Juan 3-0 thanks to a goal from Alexander Chung and a brace from Joey Parish, and the U18s won 6-0 with Tolossa Hassan scoring a hat trick in the win.
CENTRAL
Two goals from U.S. youth international Alan Winn led the way for Solar Chelsea U18 in a 4-1 win over Sporting KC at home. Along with Winn’s double, Jordan Shankle and Nicolas Lozada-Smith provided the goals. Solar U16s also picked up the full points, winning 3-2 on the day.
Goals from Patrick Khouri and Yannick Koffi early on in the second half propelled FC Dallas U18 to a 2-0 win over local rivals Dallas Texans. FCD’s U16s also won, with Ryan Barlow, Nicholas Hamalainen and Emanuel Perez all tallying in a 3-1 defeat of the Texans.
Shattuck-Saint Mary’s U18s triumphed in a shootout with the Chicago Magic on Saturday. Abdulla Al-Kalisy scored twice, while Ricardo Lopez-Espin and Akeeem Ward added goals of their own in the 4-2 win. Michael Carragher and Andrija Novakovich provided the goals for the Magic in the losing effort. Kendall Stork scored a hat trick for the Magic in the U16 meeting, which the Chicago side won 6-0.
