Academy Recap: U14s kick off the season
The 2013-14 Development Academy season kicked off on Saturday with a smattering of games across the country. The majority of the fixtures featured teams from the newly introduced U13/14 age group, but there were some clashes in the older divisions as well.
West
The West only had games in the U14 age group over the weekend. Pateadores made the biggest splash over the opening weekend with a 7-0 win over Arsenal FC on Saturday. Christopher Lopez scored a hat trick and Robert Juarez added two goals for Pats in the big win. Jose Macias and Jhovany Tenorio also scored in the victory.
LA Galaxy U14s bounced back from a first half deficit against Central California Aztecs to claim a 4-1 win on Saturday. Marc Farias, Ian Lonergan, Jesus Nunez, and Ateno Ajeakwa scored the goals for Galaxy, which cancelled out a first-half strike from Ivan Sanchez.
San Diego Surf used three goals in four minutes in the second half to help push past Albion on Saturday. Mckay Eves started the outburst with Vardhin Manoj and Stephen May following suit. Manoj also notched a goal in the first half as well. Angel Mendoza scored for Albion.
Chivas USA also started the season with three points with a 5-2 road win over Santa Barbara Soccer Club. Christopher Hernandez and Leonides Cuteno both scored twice for the Goats. Oscar Penate added the other goal. Matthew Bautista and Max Taylor-Sheppard scored for the home side in the second half.
In the Northwest Division, San Jose Earthquakes rolled to a 9-1 win over Ballistic United in their opener. Arturo Wuest and Amado Lozano both recorded a hat trick for the Quakes. Kaya Fabbretti, Christopher Sumano, and Ivan Valencia each scored a goal.
Alexander Caceres scored four goals to lead Juventus Sport Club to a 6-0 win over San Mateo County Star on Saturday. Manuel Delgado and Dylan Williams notched the other goals.
Central
CSA Wolves started the season in typical fashion – with a shutout victory. This time Internationals SC was the victim of a 0-4 result in the U16 age group. Kalenga Selemani scored twice for the Wolves and Daniel Wright and Bryan Prudil added a goal each. In the U18 age group, CSA Wolves came away with a 2-0 win behind goals from Dean Bloembergen and Blake Townes. Spencer Ward recorded the shutout in goal. The U14 age group was much the same with Wolves walking away with a 6-0 win. Farai Mutatu scored a hat trick. Samuel Landefeld, Nicholas Isham, and Jack Beck each added a goal.
Colin Fernandez scored twice and helped Chicago Fire U18 to a 3-1 win over St. Louis Scott Gallagher Metro. Bradley Dunwell had the other goal for Fire while Anthony Brown found the back of the net for Metro. Ben Rhoder and Rogioberto Rojas scored for Fire in the U16 clash against Metro, which the Fire won 2-1. Anthony Markanich, Brayden Calipari, and Vitalis Takawira led the charge for Fire U14 win a 3-1 win to complete the sweep over Metro.
East
Philadelphia Union enjoyed its debut weekend in the Development Academy with a cool sweep of the two Richmond clubs. Colin Brezniak helped set the tone on Saturday with a pair of goals for Union U14 in a 3-1 win over Richmond Kickers. Isaiah Young also helped Union to a dream weekend with three goals in two games for the U16 squad. Brandon Levano helped the U18 squad to a pair of wins, as well. Levano notched the opener against the Kickers on Saturday.
PDA U16 also started the season with a pair of wins. Striker Jalil Blalock scored in both games to help PDA to a 2-0-0 record. Erik Swenson notched a hat trick against Richmond Strikers.
Defending champion New York Red Bulls U18 were held to a 2-2 draw on Saturday against Revolution Empire. Alexander Tejera and Dugan Zier scored for Ney Work in the opening 35 minutes before goals from Matthew Vuylsteke and Evan Walsh put the clubs back on level terms. Red Bulls won the U16 game 3-2 thanks to late goals from Mason Deeds and Jared Gilbey. Adnan Bakalobic and Ryan Bayne scored for Revolution Empire.
Georgia United swept past South Carolina United Battery Academy in all three age groups on Saturday. Jad Arslan scored the lone goal for Georgia United in a 1-0 win in the U18 age group. Moise Suri, Chris Mikus, and Josh Bronstorph scored for Georgia United U16 in a 3-2 win. Cole Gaston and Conor Sloan notched the goals for Battery in that contest. U.S. U14 Boys National Team midfielders Juan Torres and Christopher Goslin scored in a 4-1 win for Georgia United U14 over Battery. Daniel Espinoza and Andre Benoit scored the other two goals for Georgia United.
