This year’s Generation adidas Cup crowns were captured by MLS sides, as the weeklong tournament concluded on Sunday.

Held at IMG Academy in Bradenton, Florida this year, Austin won its first tournament trophy in the franchise’s short history. Its academy launched only in 2019, and the Under-15 team won it in a penalty shootout over the Union.

The two sides drew 1-1 over the course of 90 minutes, with both sides having plenty of chances. Austin scored first via an own goal in the 24th minute. A back pass from center back Andrei Chirila bounced over Alex Smith’s clearance attempt and found the back of the net.

Philadelphia equalized early in the second half, as Jamir Johnson capped off an impressive bulid up with a back post finish. Peter Doran found Cavan Sullivan on the wing, who played left back Jordan Griffin into space. Griffin cut back the ball to his right foot, and his cross picked out Johnson at the far post.

Both teams had chances in the second half and extra time, but neither found the back of the net.

Union wins first Generation adidas Cup since 2012

While Austin’s win denied the Union a shot at a sweep on Sunday, the Philadelphia Union Under-17 squad did win the Generation adidas Cup at the oldest age group.

It marked the organizations first win since the 2012 edition of the tournament, when internationals teams didn’t make the trip.

The Union won this year’s competition with a 1-0 defeat of FC Dallas. A Devon DeCorte penalty in the first half made up the difference. Philadelphia’s Andrew Rick made a couple of impressive saves to preserve the deficit, and FC Dallas came close to equalizing twice in the dying minutes of the game.

Defense was a hallmark of the Union squad during its time in Florida, conceding just two goals from seven games, and just one in the knockout stage.
