Banner weekend for young MLS players
As Major League Soccer looks to thread the needle and continue the 2020 campaign amidst the Coronavirus pandemic.
The stack up of fixtures has opened the door for some young, MLS talent to get a chance over the past few days. Overall, it was relatively banner day for younger players in MLS. Oftentimes neglected, there were several notable performances from U.S. youth national team-eligible player.
Daryl Dike continues to gain momentum
It wasn’t until August 22 that the No. 5 overall draft Daryl Dike made his official debut for Orlando City (although he played a few knockout games at the MLS is Back tournament, those were not counted as official matches).
Since August 22, Dike’s caught fire. He’s made three straight starts, scoring three times and adding three assists. He’s obviously a noticeable player due to his 6-foot-2, 220-pound frame. But he’s much more than just a big body, an intelligent player that makes good runs and has soft feet. Over the past week, he nabbed a brace against Nashville on Wednesday, before adding an assist in Orlando’s 3-1 win against Atlanta.
