Commitment: Brown

A technical player with a strong work ethic, Dean Bloembergen has put in the hours to make himself a better player over the past few years.

It’s now opened the door for him to play college soccer in the Ivy League, where he’ll join Brown next fall after making his verbal commitment.

“I was looking for a college with strong academics and a promising soccer program where I could contribute and help bring the team success,” Bloembergen told TopDrawerSoccer.com. “I decided to commit to Brown when I realized it was the perfect fit. Academically, it is one of the top schools in the country, it has a nationally competitive soccer program and I believe I can play a positive role as a player there.”

Part of the pull to Brown was the program’s on-field accomplishments and accolades.

“Historically Brown has a terrific record,” he said. “They were ranked in the top 20 nationally in three of the last five years, have had 27 NCAA appearances and the most Ivy League Conference Championships. I also believe they have a very promising future, as it’s clear they are in the midst of building a great team. The coaching staff is first-class and I believe they will help me reach my potential as a player. The players seemed to really enjoy being part of the program. They were all friendly and I felt comfortable that I would fit in well.”

Away from soccer, the campus and what he saw in the classroom also impressed Bloembergen.

“Brown’s campus is beautiful and has a great atmosphere,” he said. “Although it’s located in a large city, it is on a hill in a historic area and has a smaller, college-town feel.  Everything is walkable and convenient. Everyone was friendly and seemed to enjoy being a student there. However, what made the biggest impression was when I sat in on a lecture and was able to experience the atmosphere of a Brown lecture hall. You could feel the student’s enthusiasm to learn, and the professor’s enthusiasm to teach. Although Brown is a leading research university, undergraduate education is a top priority.”

Bloembergen is the second verbal commitment to Brown for 2015.

Kyle Adams, Defender, Ole Football Academy (New Zealand)
Class: 2015
Commitment: San Diego State

San Diego State has looked to the Southern Hemisphere for the latest addition to its 2015 recruiting class.

Kyle Adams, a center back from Auckland, New Zealand, is the latest verbal commitment who will join the team next year. He liked the program’s tight-knit atmosphere and was impressed by the athletic facilities.

Similarities to home were another plus.

“San Diego is arguably the best city to live in regards to climate and it is quite similar in size to my hometown,” Adams said. “It’s only 30 minutes away from my brother in Oceanside.”

The defender, who has ambitions to try and crack the New Zealand Under 20 for next year’s World Cup, is also eager to improve his game at the college level.

“The coaching staff is great and I feel SDSU will be a great stepping stone for me to go pro.”
