Lorenzo Scala, Midfielder, FC Copa
Class: 2014
Commitment: Monmouth
A technical midfielder who can also play up top, Lorenzo Scala looks for the combinations, helping his team keep the ball to unlock opposing defenses.
The FC Copa standout was lured to Monmouth because he felt the school was the right fit for him.
“I committed to Monmouth University because it had the perfect balance of a academics and soccer,” Scala told TopDrawerSoccer.com. “Not only is Monmouth a beautiful school, but the men’s soccer program has been very strong and able to compete on a national level which was exactly what I was looking for.”
He also saw that the team likes keeping the ball on the ground and retaining possession, a team that would fit what he likes to do on the field.
“The Monmouth soccer program plays a style of soccer that I think suits me as a player,” he said. “The field and facilities are also top notch which only added to the likability of the campus and program.”
Staying close to home was another bonus.
“As far as the school, it is fairly close to my hometown while also being far enough away that I'm able to live on campus,” Scala explained. “The school is also about a mile from the beach so there is always something to do when the weather is nice. I was also drawn to the wide range of finance and business majors they have to offer.”
Sasha Boussina, Midfielder, Marin FC
Class: 2014
Commitment: San Francisco
Northern California midfield maestro Sasha Boussina didn’t have to look too far away from home to play Division I soccer.
“I decided to commit to San Francisco as the historic prestige of the program was a huge draw as well as the location of the school,” he told TopDrawerSoccer.com. “The bay is the one of the best places across the Continental U.S. and it was a perfect place for me to go.”
While Boussina made his verbal commitment several months ago, he is excited and intrigued about the new staff, led by former UCLA assistant Eddie Soto.
“There is a new coaching staff which will greatly boost and enhance the program in a very positive direction,” Boussina said. “The other fantastic part of the school is their new sports technology and science in regards to injury, recovery, injury prevention, workouts, etc. They are part of a revolution with new technologies such as Sparta while their technicians, trainers, and coaches are all phenomenal.”
The Mill Valley, Calif. native will also attend school a 20 minute drive away from home, another draw for him.
“The school will provide a perfect education for me as well as give me a place not too far from home while allowing me to play soccer at the top level,” he said. “It was a perfect package. I can't wait for it to all begin.”
Boussina is part of an eight player recruiting class reported for 2014.
Frank Carsonie, Midfielder, Crew Soccer Academy
Class: 2015
Commitment: Denver
The Crew Soccer Academy has become a pipeline for producing Division I soccer talent, a tradition that will continue in earnest in 2015. Frank Carsonie became the latest Ohio product bound to a big-time soccer program.
“I decided to commit to Denver because of the whole package at the program,” Carsonie told TopDrawerSoccer.com. “Between the coaching staff, players, and the mentality of the soccer team, I felt that I would be able to grow as a player and as a person. The academic programs at the Denver are ones in which I feel I can be challenged and have the best opportunity for success after of college.”
Hitting off with the current players on the roster during a visit was a huge factor in the decision. Along with that, he was impressed with the direction the program is heading under the current coaching staff.

“The mentality coach Muuss, coach Franks, and coach Hopkins have instilled in the program was one in which I felt I would have the best chance to grow as a player. The whole program felt like a family to me, which was a huge part especially because I will be so far from home.”
Denver also offered Carsonie the opportunity to pursue his major of choice.
“I would like to major in finance, and the Daniels College of Business was a place that I felt I could get the most out of my college learning experience,” he said. “The private school aspect appealed to me as well, and the faculty to student ration is one in which I feel I will thrive as a student. Also, the mountains in the background, 300 days of sun a year, and the city less than 5 miles away really felt like a place I could call home so far from home.”
Carsonie is the second commitment to Denver for its 2015 recruiting class.
