Crescenta Valley undefeated; LAFC wins
September 29, 2010
There were several close games at this week’s Coast Soccer League matches. The small margin of victories and numerous ties are indicative that by the third weekend of play, most teams are now starting to find cohesiveness and flow within the game. It probably didn’t help that Southern California was going through a horrendous heat wave.
“The weather was about 100 degrees, we had several really hot games,” said Reggie Rivas, head coach of the Crescenta Valley Soccer Club U18 Girls team.
Crescenta Valley SC was one of the many squads that came away on the winning side of multiple very close games.
Saturday’s bout against South Bay Force almost saw a two-goal margin disappear. Winger Janelle Topete opened the scoring summary as she finished off a rebound from a cross by Delani Curtis. Taryn Leathrop doubled the lead after finding herself at the end off a corner kick from Delani.
“It was a great game, from the top all the way through, South Bay really battled us to the very end,” Rivas said. “Every game has been a dangerous game, it could have gone either way. We were fortunate to be on top.”
Sunday’s game against Ventura County Fusion wasn’t any picnic either. Lapse of concentration didn’t allow Crescenta Valley to extent its winning margin to a comfortable lead.
Delani’s blast on goal was put away by Jordan Royer off the rebound, while Delani also found the back of the net, giving Crescenta Valley a 2-0 lead by halftime once again.
“Delani is a playmaker, has great vision, and is a great distributor with the ball,” Rivas said. “We try to get her the ball as much as possible.”
The story seamed to repeat itself as the Fusion cut the deficit in half, but Jaden Osmon scored with 15 minutes left for the 3-1 lead. Ventura County added one last goal of its own, but it was too late as the final whistle ensued.
With the pair of wins, the Girls U18 Crescenta Valley SC is at the top of the CSL standings with 13 points.
On the boy’s side, U19 LAFC West Black had similar close calls, downing NVSC Rampage on Saturday and South Bay Force on Sunday with the same 3-2 score, giving LAFC West its first two wins of the season.
Meanwhile the Fullerton Rangers White U16 Boys tallied its first points. After going winless in three games, the team tied Albion SC 1-1, and followed with another draw against Select Cities Boca Jr., 2-2, on Sunday.
