LANCASTER, Mass.  - The US Youth Soccer National Championships continued Thursday with the second day of preliminary round play at Citizens Bank Fields at Progin Park, in Lancaster, Mass., outside of Boston. It was a must-win situation for many of the teams looking to advance to this weekend's finals. Teams earn three points for a win and one point for a tie. The two top teams at the conclusion of tomorrow's round robin play will meet over the weekend in the National Championship finals.  

Under-16 Girls
De Anza Force 92 Blue (CA-N) came from behind to tie their match against the experienced So Cal Blues Dodge (CA-S). So Cal finished the first half up by one after goals from Emily Goldstein in the 6th minute and Gabriella Garcia in the 39th minute. Lauren Heer put the Force on the board in the 27th minute. After a penalty kick save by Force keeper Emily Kruger, Alesha Blair scored the equalizer in the 68th minute. The game ended tied 2-2.  Today’s result placed De Anza in tie for first in the standings with Ponte Vedra Storm (FL) and knocked So Cal in third.

Defending 2008 National Champions, Dallas Texans (N-TX) earned their first win of the championships over Cleveland FC (OH-N). Cleveland struck first in the 11th minute with a goal from Jillian Graff. The Texans scored two goals in the next 15 minutes to capture the lead. Kelly Monogue scored in the 22nd minute and Abby Smith finished in the 27th minute. Taylor Grant brought the Texan’s lead to 3-1 in the 58th minute. Cleveland’s Jaclyn Camp scored in the 70th minute to cut the Texan advantage to 3-2. Texans took the 3-2 win and three points in the standings. 

In a high scoring match, Ponte Vedra Storm (FL) won 5-2 over Syosset Rough Riders (E-NY).  Florida hasn’t had a team make it to the National Championships since 2004 and it has been 12 years since Florida claimed a National Championship title. Today, the Storm went up by three at the half thanks goals from Allison Brashear, Morgan Brian and Kaili Torres. In the 47th minute Alexandra Gerry added again for the Storm but in the next minute Amy Marron rallied for the Rough Riders (4-1).  Storm’s Gerry would score again in the 51st minute and again Marron matched it for the Rough Riders in the 63rd minute for the 5-2 final.

Under-17 Boys
Longtime Eastern Pennsylvania rivals, YMS Xplosion and Lower Merion Velez, who have been battling each other since they were eight-years-old, took to the field today in another clash of pride. Lower Merion had 10 shot attempts and YMS had four, but none were successful. The spirited game ended 0-0.

Dallas Texans-Houston 92 Red Under-17 Boys of South Texas took the early lead on North Carolina’s Triangle United off a Michael Parrish corner to Chandler Broz in the 5th minute. Triangle marched back with an 11th minute McAmos Paye equalizer for the 1-1 score. Triangle pushed it to 2-1 with a German Mendoza goal. Triangle capped off the 4-1 victory with goals from Robert Lovejoy and Sebastian Garner in the 45th and 82nd minutes respectfully.

CZ Elite (CA-S) secured their first win of the 2009 National Championships by holding Javanon 92s (KY)  scoreless and producing four goals before the final whistle blew. Gor Kirakosyan put up CZ Elite’s first goal in the 35th minute. After the half, Jesus Gonzalez netted a 51st minute goal and Eder Arreola had one in the 77th minute. Henry Bunkall completed the 4-0 CZ Elite win with a strike in stoppage time.

Under-17 Boys have a three way tie for the lead in standings between Lower Merion, Triangle United and CZ Elite.

Under-17 Girls
The Under-17 Girls PDA Fire (NJ) stands atop the standings after their second win of the week against Internationals (OH-S), 1-0. The Fire are three time Region I Champions and have placed second and third at the National Championships. This year they want the crown. Rachel Davitt scored in the 42nd minute for the win.

Washington’s Crossfire Premier looked to knock off the defending National Champions, Dallas Texans Red 92 (N-TX). The defending champs took an early lead on a Shelby Redman goal in the 8th minute to take the 1-0 lead, which they held until right before the end of the first half when Crossfire’s Kory Spotts hit the equalizer. Amanda Frisbie’s 64th minute shot gave the Texans the 2-1 upper hand, but again, Crossfire fought back to tie (2-2) when Emily Hurd struck in the 84th minute.   

A 7th minute strike from Kimberly Spence gave GSA Phoenix 92 Red (GA) the 1-0 lead over Eclipse Select 91-92 (IL). Alexa Newfield widened the GSA advantage over Eclipse in the 17th minute, but Eclipse cut GSA’s lead in half (2-1) with Samantha Scofield's goal in the 26th minute. Eclipse rallied with a Christy Patterson goal in the 87th minute (2-2).   

Under-18 Boys
Dillon Tufty gave WSM Internationals an early lead with his 14th minute goal against Kentucky’s Javanon 91. Ten minutes later, Alex Abedian hit the equalizer for Javanon. There were several shots on goal, but the respective keepers did their part to keep the game in a 1-1 deadlock. Javanon are second in the standings after two days of play and below DSC, who have won both of their games.

Eleven minutes into the DSC 90 Green and East Fishkill Thunder match, DSC’s Ralph Lundy was on his way to a hat trick with goals in the 7th and 11th minutes. Dennis Moore netted another DSC goal in the 30th before Fishkill got on the boards with a 39th minute Jake Keegan goal. Lundy completed his hat trick in the 45th minute to bring the game to 4-1. After the half, DSC continued on a scoring spree when Moore netted his second in the 65th minute and teammate Enzo Martinez had back-to-back goals in the 70th and 77th minutes. Lundy finalized the 8-1 DSC win with his fourth goal of the game.  DSC has secured their spot in the final.

Under-19 Boys
Indiana’s Pike Indy Burn took the early advantage on the 2006 National Champions, Baltimore Casa Mia Bays of Maryland with a Raymond Gaddis goal in the 30th minute. Burn held control of the game until a Bays’ John Raley completed a PK and evened the score, 1-1 in the 90th minute. Gary Weisbaum finished off the Bays 2-1 victory late in the 92nd minute. Baltimore is tied with NASA for the top standing in the U-19 Boys after two days of play.

Coming off of a day one scoreless tie with the Baltimore Bays, Georgia’s North Atlanta SA (NASA) 08 Elite was looking to get the offense going in today’s game against Colorado Rush. Christopher Klute had a 3rd minute goal for the early NASA lead. The Rush stayed poised, but was unable to finish any of their five shots on goal. NASA won 1-0 and are set to play Pike Indy Burn of Indiana in the final day of round robin games tomorrow.

Under-19 Girls
FC Delco Fury II (E-PA) held an early lead over BUSA 90 (AL) in the 3rd minute on a Brooke Stokes strike, but BUSA countered with a goal of their own in the 7th minute from Alexandra Russell. Fury’s Megan Verdeur hit Stokes in the 31st minute for the 2-1 lead. In the 44th minute, BUSA’s Lauren Alwine found teammate Logan May for the 2-2 tie. With the game nearing an end, BUSA’s Tiffini Turpin found the back of the net in the 80th minute for the 3-2 BUSA victory.

Only one minute into Eclipse Select 89-90 (IL) game against the defending National Champions, Colorado Rush Nike, Laruen Levitt found the back of the net for the early 1-0 Eclipse lead. Colorado worked to get on the board and in the 57th minute Danielle Foxhoven had success for the 1-1 tie.  Looking for a win, Julie Ewing netted one in the 82nd minute for the 2-1 Eclipse win.  The defending champs will look to earn a spot in Sunday’s final with a win over BUSA tomorrow.

The tournament consists of US Youth Soccer Regional Champions in the Under-14 through Under-19 Boys and Girls age groups for boys and girls as well as the US Youth Soccer National League qualifiers in the Under-15 through Under-17 Boys and Girls age groups to complete the field of 60 teams.

Annually the US Youth Soccer National Championship Series provides the nation's top collegiate coaches with the premier stage to identify and scout the most coveted players in the country. In 2009, over 600 coaches attended the US Youth Soccer Regional Championships.
