Here are some of the recaps from Saturday’s matches:
Cruzeiro cruise through victory over Crew Juniors
Despite suffering a defeat on day one, Manhattan Cruzeiro were able to brush that to the side and finish with a 1-0 victory over Grand Rapids Crew Juniors Boys Gold.
“We had a hard time yesterday, but we played better in the second half and were able to put it together,” Cruzeiro head coach Wilson Egidio told TopDrawerSoccer.com after the victory. “We have to concentrate on set-plays, we have to keep playing to get a result and with the victory we got a well-deserved three points.
“Miguel’s (Chung) free kick was wonderful. I know he has that skill, and it was those Ronaldinho free-kicks that won us the game. I hope that goal gave him the confidence as we move forward.”
Forward Miguel Chung’s 50th minute rocket strike from a free kick outside the box was able to curl toward the top left corner of the net, beating Grand Rapids’ goalkeeper for the eventual game winner.
While the first half of the match was played scoreless, the team from Grand Rapids, Michigan contested Manhattan’s goalkeeper, however, defender Andrew Cohen’s fierce attempt on protecting the back like paid dividends for Egidio’s men.
While Chung’s goal came five minutes into the second half, a wave of attacks followed, but Cruzeiro weren’t able to execute on the final third.
Cruzeiro looks to clinch a berth in the championship game when they take on Jacksonville FC 97/98 on Sunday.
Tampa Rangers overpower New York SC
You can make that two-straight victories for FC Tampa Rangers, as they went on to defeat New York SC, 1-0, on Saturday morning.
“It was a great game to build on, and excellent goal from Mike (Connel) to get us further into the championship game,” head coach John Hrenko told TopDrawerSoccer.com. “We’re proud of the victory, and very proud on how we played throughout the whole game.”
After a scoreless first half, Mike Connel found the back of the net in the 50th minute when he stuck from near range, crippling New York SC’s defense in the process.
New York SC played much of the game without midfielder Devin Flanagan after he received a yellow card in the first half, which resulted in head coach Alex Rincon sitting him down for much of the match for precautionary reasons.
