With a format of playing three group games in three days, the 2024 edition of the Generation adidas Cup wrapped on Monday from IMG Academy in Florida.
MLS sides matched up against each other and club teams from around the country in Bradenton. The Round of 16 will take place on Wednesday, April 3, progressing through to a final on Sunday.
The Top 16 teams (10 first place sides and six second-place squads) advance to the Championship Bracket; the next 16 in the Premier Bracket, and the final in the Consolation.
International sides have shined brightest through the opening weekend in the Under-15 age group. Toulouse FC (France), Valencia CF (Spain) and Brondby IF (Denmark) all dominated their respective groups against MLS opposition, winning all three games.
That’s not to say all MLS sides struggled; Orlando City progressed as runners up against Arsenal, drawing the English side over the weekend 1-1 (with the Gunners picking up an extra point by winning the shootout). Zachary Olah and Jakob Garcia top the goal-scoring charts from MLS sides, with three apiece in the age group.
St. Louis City SC and Atlanta United both won two games in Group F, advancing to the knockout rounds as well.
Teams from abroad also look dangerous at the Under-17 age group. PSV Eindhoven, River Plate, Hajduk Split, Flamengo and Korean side Jeonbuk Hyundai Motors all advanced to the Championship knockout tier. That quintet will be difficult for the 11 MLS sides that advanced to beat.
San Jose Earthquakes were the only side to secure full nine points from the MLS teams in the U17 age group, and will look to carry that form into a Round of 16 matchup against Houston Dynamo. Vitaliy Hlyut's four goals helped the Fire punch a ticket to the Round of 16 as well.
Five MLS sides had both teams advance to the Championship Bracket: LA Galaxy, San Jose Earthquakes, FC Cincinnati, Real Salt Lake and New York Red Bulls.
