Kelli Sullivan, Midfielder, Eastside FC
Class: 2015
Commitment: Colorado College
When it comes to underrated programs in the women’s Division I ranks, Colorado College is definitely up there.
A contender in whatever conference it has been in, the work of head coach Geoff Bennett helped land the commitment of Kelli Sullivan, a player from the Pacific Northwest.
“I really loved the atmosphere of the school and soccer program,” she told TopDrawerSoccer.com. “I am a huge fan and really enjoyed working with coach Bennett, coach [Heather] Masters and coach [Matt] Gwilliam during the recruiting process. I also got a great vibe from the players and felt that I could fit in with the team.”
Along with being impressed with the coaching staff, Sullivan was intrigued by what the program offered off the field, and was intrigued by the team’s new conference.
“For a small school the facilities were amazing, as good as you will find anywhere,” she said. “I got a real sense that everyone that is a part of the women’s soccer program at Colorado College are great individuals that are working hard to make the team the best it can be which you can see from the recent success they have had. I want to keep that going and help them get to the next level. The recent announcement they would be joining the Mountain West Conference is also very exciting.”
Sullivan also came away with the impression that she’ll be set from an academic perspective – a huge part of every recruit’s search.
“The smaller school and the student to faculty ratio were important,” she explained. “I also like their unique Block Plan. It allows for more focus and flexibility that will benefit both my studies and my soccer career. I also thought that the campus was beautiful and the location is fantastic, Colorado Springs is a great city with much to offer.”
Emily Martin, Defender, Heat FC
Class: 2016
Commitment: Texas
A tough and swift central defender for Heat FC, Emily Martin’s college search followed a specific set of criteria led her to one place.
“Academics and campus atmosphere were my first priorities when choosing a college,” she said. “In addition, I wanted to play soccer for a program that would compete at the highest level and push me to be a great student. The first time I visited the University of Texas I knew that was the place for me. Texas has an amazing blend of academics, alumni support, campus life, and location. I have never met anyone who doesn't like Austin. Academically, Texas has some of the best degree programs and teachers in the world. A degree from Texas will open doors after graduation.”
Martin’s search also valued finding a program that echoed the same things as her club side did.
“I have been lucky to play for coaches at Heat who care about their players both on and off the field. Therefore, it is important for me to play for coaches who share that focus in college. Coach Angela Kelly is building a great program at Texas. She is a great coach who inspires her players to work hard on the field and be leaders off it.”
On the whole, Martin liked how the team placed such a high emphasis on academics.
“The coaches also make it clear that we are students first and must work hard in the classroom,” she said. “Last year Texas had 19 players earn Big-12 academic awards while competing for a Big-12 championship. Coach Kelly also fosters a family atmosphere among the coaches and players. That is very important to me.”
