Virginia Schorr, Defender, Birmingham United SA
Class: 2017
Commitment: Alabama
After spending the past few years commuting 2 hours and 45 minutes each way to practices in Alabama, Virginia Schorr will remain in her club’s state for college soccer.
Schorr recently committed to join the Crimson Tide soccer program in 2017.
“I committed to Alabama because it was the total package,” she told TopDrawerSoccer. “University of Alabama offers incredible athletic support and resources, a beautiful campus, and a great education. I knew Alabama was the right choice during my visit because it just felt like it fit me perfectly.”
An ACL injury suffered in the spring of 2014 knocked her out of the game during her U16 season, though she rejoined Birmingham United for her U17 campaign. A hard worker who is always striving to improve on the field, a connection with the coaches and players at Alabama also helped her decision.
“Coach Wes Hart was easy to communicate with throughout the recruiting process,” Schorr said. “He also has a good relationship with Ben Parks and Andrew Brower, my club coaches at Birmingham United, so I feel confident that they will work together to help me prepare for Division I soccer in the Southeastern Conference. Coach Hart has seen me play some really good games, and he has also seen me play some that weren’t my best. He has recognized my strengths as a player, and I feel confident that he will help me continue to improve my game.
Schorr had her sights set on a program that would challenge her to improve personally, while finding a team that wants to succeed on the field – both fitting traits of the Alabama soccer program.
After she saw the campus, her mind was made up.
“Until I visited, I had no idea how beautiful the Alabama campus is,” Schorr said. “The athletic facilities were amazing, and my parents were very impressed with the Academic Support Center for Student Athletes. The University of Alabama has led the nation in Academic All-America honors in the last two years. It has always been my dream to play soccer in the Southeastern Conference and the University of Alabama is one of the largest schools in the conference. I look forward to my next steps with the University of Alabama and can’t wait to help the Alabama team get to the next level.”
Five players are committed to join Alabama in 2017.
Katelyn Fowler, Goalkeeper, Kimball Union Academy
Class: 2016
Commitment: Elon
Once she paid a visit to Elon, Katelyn Fowler knew that it was the right place for her.
“I decided to commute to Elon because right away I loved the campus,” she told TopDrawerSoccer. “I love where it is located and just the feel of it. I also really liked the coaches and the way they want to make each individual better.”
The New Hampshire native had other options closer to home on the radar, but liked Elon’s ambition on the soccer field and a comfort level away from the pitch.

“I specifically like how the coaches have a drive to win, as well as, the drive to develop each player into the best they can be,” Fowler said. “I wanted a home like feel for my college choice; but I also wanted a feel of going away to a University. I got this exact feeling when I went to Elon. Right away I knew I wanted to go there.”
Two players are committed to join Elon in 2016.
