BRADENTON, Fla. — Day one of the IMG Cup College Soccer Showcase kicked off on Friday with the girls tournament.
While goals headlined opening day, resiliency proved to be more noticeable as a plethora of teams rallied back to stamp a victory on day one of the tournament.
Here are some of the recaps from Friday’s games:
USL ODP Atherley rally back, top IMG U16 Select
Forward Sydney Spruill put IMG ahead in the first 10 minutes, however midfielder Shannon Keefe’s double helped Atherley rally back to win 2-1 on Friday afternoon.
“I give a lot of credit to our players. To go out and put a good performance, and how we responded was good for our confidence,” head coach Scott Atherley told TopDrawerSoccer.com. “This is a group of individuals that played a group that’s been together for a while, and as the game went on the girls got comfortable with each other.”
Midfielder Nikiay Comer put IMG on the scoreboard first with a close range shot after Spruill found her unmarked in the center of the box.
Despite conceding a goal early in the match, Keefe was able to respond moments later after a solo effort had the forward with the goalkeeper to beat, as she equalized the match 1-1. With the teams tied at halftime, Keefe once again was able to continue Atherley’s momentum when she scord the eventual game-winner in the second half.
Five goal thriller, as Pitt Greenville bounce back vs. Celtic
Despite being two goals down early in the first half, U15 Pitt Greenville rallied back for a 4-2 victory over Celtic.
Alexia Moore put one back for Greenvile before the halftime mark. Madison Hoopes then leveled the match moments into the second half. Greenville’s second-half resurgent continued to show after waves of attacks came inched closer to the game winner.
Shelby Jones’ penalty kick late in the second half proved to be the game winner, as Greenville rallied back from two goals to start day one of the tournament with a win.
