New U.S. U18s play way into spotlight
When a young player gets the call into a U.S. National Team camp it’s the ultimate badge of honor. For some, it’s affirmation of a youth career that has regularly drawn interest from U.S. Soccer, while for others it marks the achievement of an athlete playing themselves onto the national radar for the first time.
There are examples of each instance within the latest 24 players who have been called into the U.S. U18 Women’s National Camp. The gathering will run concurrently with the U.S. U20 camp and will take place June 7-14 in Chula Vista, California.
Emily Sonnett is a standout who will be making her first appearance at a U.S. camp. Ranked No. 24 in our 2012 class Top 100, the North Atlanta Soccer club midfielder has finally played her way onto the ultimate stage.
“It’s an honor to be invited to a WNT camp, and it makes me feel as though all of the hard work over the last few years is paying off,” Sonnett said. “It’s allowing me to reach a goal I’ve had for quite awhile.”
Sonnett will be joined on the U18 side by stars like Stephanie Amack, Ashley Meier, Taylor Schneider and Indiana Mead.
Dallas Texans’ forward Sophie Groff will also be enjoying her first camp go-around next week. Groff, ranked No. 50 in our 2013 Top 100, can’t wait to take her place among the biggest names in the country, and possibly leave a lasting impression.
“My main goal is just to leave a good impression,” she said. “I want to stand out both on offense and defense and let the coaches know I will give 110 percent every time I step on the field.”
