Previewing the U17 Women's World Cup
Back on August 22, it looked like the U17 Women’s World Cup might be moved. The All India Football Federation was suspended from FIFA due to breaches in regulations, thrusting the tournament, due to be held in October, into massive doubt. But, four days later, the AIFF made amends, clearing the way for the tournament to go ahead in India as planned.
And that’s a good thing for a US side that seems well equipped to contend at this tournament. This is a team that’s had little difficulty getting results in recent months. It rolled through the Concacaf U17 championship, winning all seven games while only conceding once. More recently, it won two out of three in a brief European trip for exhibition matches.
The World Cup will undoubtedly be trickier. Although the US appears to have been drawn into a relatively friendly group, no major competition match is easy. And should it progress to the knockout rounds, a litany of good teams could end World Cup dreams early. Here’s a look at where the team is now, and how it might fare in the coming weeks.
Group Schedule
October 11 vs. India, 10:30 a.m.
October 14 vs. Brazil, 7 a.m.
October 17 vs. Morocco, 10:30 a.m.
