Pro Prospects: Young Yanks back in action
One day after turning 21, Werder Bremen II forward Isaiah Young finally scored his first goal in a competitive match in Germany.
On the books with the club over the past couple of seasons, the American forward scored what turned out to be the game-winning goal against FC St. Pauli II. His 44th minute tally game Bremen II a 2-0 lead before the break, and they would hold on for the win. Born in 1998, Young would be eligible for the recently kicked off U.S. U23 MNT player pool ahead of next summer’s Olympics.
The goal is a positive sign for Young, who has played the full 90 minutes in back-to-back games for Bremen II, as he’s started to become a regular on this season for the team.
League action resumed around youth leagues in Germany, and one American received a promotion. Eintracht Frankfurt defender Mason Judge started and played the full 90 minutes in a 2-2 draw for the club’s A-Junioren side (he’d previously been a regular for the B-Junioren team).
Speaking of center backs, Christopher Richards started alongside German-American Malik Tillman, as both played the duration of a 1-0 loss against SV Stuttgarter Kickers. Richards was one of several U.S. players returning after U.S. U20 action last week in Spain.
Forward Sebastian Soto also slotted back into the starting lineup for his club, Hannover 96’s A-Junioren side. Soto played 55 minutes, getting subbed off after his side picked up a red card against a tough RB Leipzig side. Compatriot Chris Gloster, a regular with Hannover II, started and played the full match of a 2-1 defeat against Schwarz Weiss Rehden.
Another U.S. U20 player back with his club, Alex Mendez started and played 90 minutes. His SC Freiburg side managed a 4-0 win against FC Kaiserslautern. He was involved in the buildup on the first goal, an impressive finish from teammate Kevin Schade.
Perhaps no player has enjoyed the kind of club results that Michael Edwards has with his youth side. The central defender remainder present in the VfL Wolfsburg A-Junioren starting lineup, this time a 2-0 shutout win against FC St. Pauli.
Central midfielder and fellow 2000 Blaine Ferri can stake a claim to that, however. He earned another start, helping Gruether Furth to another Bayernliga win, its fifth in a row, a 3-1 defeat of FC Memmingen. Ferri’s already hit more than 1,000 minutes with the U19s as he continues to be ever present in the lineup.
Vassilev on the score sheet in England
Back on the field for Aston Villa U18s, midfielder Indiana Vassilev entered Saturday’s matchup against Brighton with his team tied at 2-2. It didn’t take long for him to make an impact on the game, scoring a goal to give Villa the lead. Unfortunately, his side conceded twice, losing 4-3 on the final whistle.
Playing in the U18 Merseyside Derby, Matteo Ritaccio entered the fray with just a couple of minutes left, as Liverpool defeated Everton by a 1-0 score on Saturday.
Draws galore in Spain
Right back Akil Watts slotted into the starting lineup, starting for RCD Mallorca Under-19s against Lleida Esportiva. He went the distance in a 1-1 draw.
Jude Burst played all 90 minutes as a central midfielder for Unificacion Bellvitge in a 2-2 draw versus Segre FC.
In Villarreal, Mukwelle Akale entered in the 77th minute with Villarreal B tied 2-2 against Olot. He couldn’t help his side find the back of the net, as the match ended in a draw.
Entering as a substitute for Barcelona’s Juvenil A side, Konrad de la Fuente wasn’t involved in any of the goals, but his squad picked up a 5-1 win. De la Fuente will be in action on Tuesday with a UEFA Youth League knockout match against Lyon.
Dest back with Jong Ajax
U.S. U20 right back Sergino Dest returned to Jong Ajax, earning another start and playing the full match of a 2-1 win against NEC’s reserve side. First team right back Noussair Mazraoui earned a red card in Sunday’s 3-1 win against PSV Eindhoven. With Champions League looming and a mid-week match, there’s potential for Dest to at least get into the 18 this week.
For now, check out the all-touch compilation below.
U17 forward Joshua Pynadath continued to have his minutes monitored with Ajax, but he did get onto the field over the weekend. He entered from the bench with his U17 side up 2-0, and they scored twice more in a 4-0 victory against Vitesse.
