Region 1 championship set
The final 36 teams have been named at the US Youth Soccer Region I Championships
Semifinals complete
BARBOURSVILLE, W.Va. (July 5, 2010) – The final 36 teams have been named at the US Youth Soccer Region I Championships as the finals schedule has been completed for Tuesday. Games will be held at Barboursville City Park in Barboursville, W.Va. After three tough days of round robin, teams in today's semifinals found the extra energy to fight for a finals slot. Tomorrow Region I Champions will be named and the Under-14 through Under-19 Boys and Girls will punch their tickets to the National Championships.
The Under-15 Girls Beadling (PA-W) and Patriots FC (NY-E) game was nail biter in the second half. Beadling scored early in the 9th minute and held the lead through the first half. Patriot's Aimee Travzel scored the equalizer in the 45th. The tie held until Oliva Roberson's goal in the 78th earned Beadling a spot in tomorrow's final against Scorpions Elite (MA).
Although Scorpions Elite (MA) have already claimed a spot at national championships via the National League, they are poised to capture a second regional championship after a 2-1 win over New Hampshire's Seacoast United. The Scorpion's McKenzie Meehan's goal in the 25th minute put the team up at the half. In the 43rd minute Brooke Sweeney found the back of the net for the 2-0 led. Late in the game, Seacoast's Rachel Hill put her team on the boards, but they weren't able to complete a second and the game ended 2-1 Scorpions.
Three-time Region I Champions, the Under-18 PDA Fire (NJ), and Connecticut's CFC United were tied at the half. The Fire regained control of the match in the second half and Alexandra Baca and Mary Gibson Wagner both scored to bring the final to 3-1.
Under-18 Girls McLean MPS Dragons (VA) controlled the pace of play today in their semifinal against Beadling Inferno (PA-W). With three goals spaced throughout the match, the Dragons stayed on the offensive. Scores were tallied by Jennifer Skogerboe, Melissa Downey and Mary Reed. Tomorrow the Dragons face PDA Fire for the Region I Championship title and a trip to Kansas for the national championship.
The Stars of Massachusetts shined brightly this afternoon in their semifinal match up against Pittsgrove Premier of New Jersey. The game started off in the 7th minute with Pittsgrove going up by one with goal from Robert Spracklin. Ten minutes later, Jonathan Silva came down the field beating two Pittsgrove defenders and then going one v. one with the keeper only to slot it in and put the Stars on the board. It was again in the 85th minute that Silva would solidify the stars win and their spot in tomorrow's 17 Boys final.
The Under 17 boys reigning 2009 Region I champion, Hicksville Strikers, stepped on to the field today against FSA FC United of Connecticut, ready to defend their title and move on to the Regional final.
Coach Gary Nemeth said, it hasn't been an easy ride at all. You know coming into this we were in the what they call group of death with Eastern Pennsylvania, New Jersey and Virginia. It was a tough ride.
The game was well matched and the score remained at zeros at the half. It wouldn't be until the 67th minute when Collin Heffron played a through ball to Matt Slotnick who tapped it right past the Connecticut keeper. After 90 minutes of play the game ended 1-0.
Under-18 Boys TSF Academy Celtics (NJ) earned a spot in the finals match against last year's champion, YMS Xplosion. The decisive 3-0 victory over Connecticut's Beachside, sets TSF up for a highly competitive championship game. Evan Reed made it past the keeper in the 6th minute for the early lead. By the half, TSF was up by two. Christopher Benedict's goal in the 61st minute gave TSF the win.
Defending Region I Champions Under-18 Boys YMS Xplosion (PA-E) is back in the finals for the Region I championship. Middle Country Rough Riders (NY-E) were stiff competition today. The teams were deadlocked at zeros until the 70th minute when Benjamin Wysocki scored a much needed goal for YMS. Five minutes later, Brian Powers took advantage of a great opportunity and YSM finished with a 2-0 win.
