U17s beat Guatemala, wrap up group play
The U.S. U17 Men’s National Team wrapped up group play from the 2019 Concacaf U17 Championship with a 3-0 win over Guatemala on Monday. USA finished a perfect 3-0 from Group F action. USA returns to action on Thursday in a Round of 16 match-up against Guadalupe. The semifinalists from the event advance to the U17 World Cup.
D.C. United’s Griffin Yow scored the opening goal on Monday in the 25th minute. LA Galaxy right back Mauricio Cuevas provided the assist on a perfectly weighted pass. Yow did well from a tight angle to blast his shot past the keeper and hit the inside of the post.
Yow was the most dangerous player on the field in the first half. He was responsible for most of the chances from USA as e did well on the right wing. USA struggled to generate much outside of Yow’s handful of looks on goal.
The D.C. homegrown signing doubled the lead in the 52nd minute. The nomadic Giovani Reyna beat three defenders then hit a perfect cross for an open Yow to head into the net.
Second half substitute Alfonso Ocampo-Chavez netted the final goal of the game. Ocampo-Chavez scored off a cross from club teammate Daniel Leyva.
With USA’s spot in the next round already wrapped up, the only drama left on Monday was how many goals USA would score in the game. Guatemala was motivated to keep the contest close as the top three teams from each group advance to the next round. Guatemala finished even on points with Barbados but snagged the third spot thanks to a better goal differential. Canada finished second in the group.
U.S. Lineup vs. Guatemala: Damian Las; Mauricio Cuevas, Tayvon Gray, Axel Alejandre, Adam Armour; Adam Saldana, Bryang Kayo (Daniel Leyva), Tyler Freeman (Alfonso Ocampo-Chavez); Griffin Yow, Ricardo Pepi, Giovanni Reyna (Gilbert Fuentes)
