For the United States Under-20 Men's National Team, it was a couple of moments of magic that made the difference in Tuesday's Concacaf Championship quarterfinal.
Facing Guatemala with a spot at the 2025 World Cup on the line, a second-half curler from Ruben Ramos Jr. in the 49th minute stood up as the winner. A long switch found the feet of the LA Galaxy forward, and he had the time and space to pick out the far corner.
That was only due to a heroic save from Adam Beaudry, who saved a penalty kick in the 89th minute, denying the opposition the chance at a late equalizer. Rudy Muñoz drew the penalty when Nima Berchimas lunged toward him in the box. But Beaudry was able to deny Olger Escobar. LAFC midfielder Matthew Evans also featured for Guatemala.
With the win, the USA reached the Under-20 World Cup for the sixth straight edition of the tournament.
Next up is a semifinal match up on Friday against either Canada or Panama at 5 p.m. EST.
U.S. Lineup: Adam Beaudry; Luca Bombino, Nolan Norris, Noah Cobb, Aiden Harangi; Brooklyn Raines (Sergio Oregel), Pedro Soma, Taha Habroune (Cruz Medina), 74); Ruben Ramos Jr. (Zavier Gozo), Niko Tsakiris (Nimfa Berchimas), Marcos Zambrano (Keyrol Figueroa)
