U.S. Under-17 MNT Lose 3-2 at World Cup

The U.S. Under-17 Men’s National Team saw its World Cup campaign end on Tuesday, falling 3-2 against Germany in the Round of 16.

Able to rally twice from one-goal deficit, Germany scored an 87th minute winner through Bilal Yalcinkaya to secure a spot in the quarterfinals.

Tyler Hall (red card) and Noahkai Banks (yellow card accumulation) were both suspended, forcing midfielder Pedro Soma to start in central defense alongside Stuart Hawkins. Germany started the first 10 minutes of the game on top, and took the lead through an exquisite free kick by Borussia Dortmund forward Charles Hermann in the 14th minute.

Getting a foothold in the game, the U.S. equalized 10 minutes later. Taha Habroune was alert to latch on to a Nimfasha Berchimas cross that was headed to the Crew midfielder. He slotted home to make it 1-1.

Goals continued to flow at 10 minute intervals, and the United States was unable to make it to the half level. Max Moerstedt restored Germany’s lead in the 34th minute. Hermann beat the U.S. defense down the right, picking out Moerstedt who had halted his run near the penalty spot and beat Beaudry.

A better showing in the second half was punctuated by a goal from substitute David Vazquez. The Philadelphia Union Academy winger curled in a low, left-footed free kick that eluded everyone and found the bottom corner in the 80th minute.

Yalcinkaya stood up as match-winner for the Germany side seven minutes after the equalizer. Finding space down the left side of the U.S. penalty box, he beat Beaudry to the near post to secure progress.

Matthew Corcoran forced a great save from the German goalkeeper in the 90th minute, the best chance the U.S. fashioned as the seconds dwindled off the clock.
