USYNT defender Tolkin joins Red Bulls
Another top talent for the class of 2020 has elected to bypass college soccer.
New York Red Bulls announced on Wednesday that defender John Tolkin has signed a Homegrown deal.
“John is regarded as a top young talent not just in our academy, but in the U.S. Youth National Team Pool as well,” Red Bulls Sporting Director Denis Hamlett said in a statement. “We are proud to have played a role in John’s development so far, and happy to share this day with him and his family as he begins his professional career.”
Tolkin, a member of the U.S. Under-17 player pool for the 2019 World Cup cycle, helped the U.S. qualify for the World Cup last fall. He didn't make the final roster, and returned for one more look during last November's Nike Friendlies.

Part of the Red Bulls Academy setup since 2015, he's made 75 appearances for the Red Bulls in Development Academy play, notching 15 goals. The up-and-coming defender took part with the Red Bulls during the 2019 preseason, and made 13 appearances for New York Red Bulls II in the USL Championship.
“I’m very excited to sign my first pro contract,” said Tolkin. “Every academy kid dreams of this, and I’m happy it’s here now. I’m ready to work hard and do everything for the club, I love the club and I can’t wait to get started.”
He had previously committed to Wake Forest.
