Without a coach, U20 WNT starts building
U.S. Soccer has not named a coach for the U20 Women’s National Team yet, but the Federation is still moving forward with this group in preparation for the World Cup next year.
Last week marked the first camp for this group, which saw 24 players brought in to help shape the core of this team for the future. Almost all of the players were familiar names to the national team structure, but there were still some interesting decisions made by the temporary coaches.
Morgan Andrews, star of the U17 Women’s National Team midfielder during the last cycle, was slotted into a center back role on Friday in the lone scrimmage for this camp. Andi Sullivan, who was cast as a forward or a midfielder in the buildup to the U17 World Cup last summer, was utilized as a defensive midfielder against UCLA.
These decisions, while not set in tone, help illuminate the stage for how current U.S. Soccer Women’s Technical Director April Heinrichs envisions this team playing in the future. Heinrichs will have the final say on who takes over as the full-time head coach, so much of what she is building now will go into the finished product as well.
What else does this mean for the U20 WNT?
