Women’s International Signees to Watch
International players feature significantly in the women’s Division I game, as coaches around the country look to boost their roster.
Keep an eye on these seven players expected to join up with Division I programs later this year.
F Deanne Rose, Florida
Few players bring Olympic experience to the 2017 season, and Rose is uniquely poised to produce from her first days one campus. With Savannah Jordan’s career up, Rose can step into the starting lineup right away. The Canadian international has the pace and athleticism that should help her succeed during her college career in Florida.
M Daisy Cleverley, California
An experienced international for New Zealand, Cleverley brings experience and veteran knowhow to a high-quality California recruiting class. With appearances at the U17, U20 and full international level, she should step into Cal’s starting lineup and contribute right away.
D Kennedy Faulknor, UCLA
Another Canadian youth international, Faulknor’s a quality center back that’s been playing at the highest level since 2014. She’ll link up with fellow Canadian star Jessie Fleming at Westwood, and compete for a spot in the starting lineup for what should be a star-studded team this year.
M Gloriana Villalobos, Florida State
It’s never a surprise to see premier international talent head to Tallahassee, and Villalobos will join Florida State in 2017. Her story is unusual, as she debuted for the full Costa Rican national team when she was only 14 years old, and has appearances for the U17s and U20s. She’ll be a great addition to a talented group of internationals, including Deyna Castellanos and Megan Connolly.
D Luisa Guttenberger, NC State
The German pipeline is set to continue in Raleigh, after the successful introductions of Ricarda Walkling and Kristina Schuster to last fall’s squad. Guttenberger is a defender that’s joining from Bayern Munich, where the former two also played. She was a mainstay for the German U17s, playing a big role at the 2015 U17 European Championships.
M Sarah Stratigakis, Michigan
Tough and tenacious in central midfield, Stratigakis is another budding Canadian star joining a Division I program this year. The midfielder made both the U20 and U17 rosters for both World Cups last year, and should slot in somewhere on the field immediately for the Wolverines.
M Zoe Cross, Missouri
An under-the-radar acquisition, there’s been a solid history of English youth internationals crossing the Atlantic and finding some success in Division I soccer. Mizzou’s already announced the addition of cross, a hard-working midfielder that’s played for the U17 and U19 English squads. Given her pedigree, she’ll be one of the top newcomers in the SEC alongside Deanne Rose.
