Welcome to a new weekly feature, tracking young Americans playing for Academy teams in Europe. Each week, we will provide a roundup of minutes played and performances from U.S. youth national team players around the continent competing in youth sides. Once players move to the first team, they will no longer be tracked, as other outlets provide those rundowns.

There’s a new American making the move to Spain.

U.S. Under-17 MNT forward Cade Hagan announced that he was joining Real Sporting de Gijon’s Academy side, effective immediately.

A U.S. youth national that competed with the Under-17s at the 2017 Nike Friendlies, Hagan’s played in the LA Galaxy Academy and with Sockers FC over the past few seasons before making the move to Spain.

Located in the north of Spain, Sporting de Gijon’s first team competes in the Segunda Division. Hagan is only joining the youth academy, and will retain his college eligibility.

Midfielder Mukwelle Akale continues to hang around at Villarreal, and he was in action over the weekend for Villarreal B. He came off the bench in the 57th minute in a 0-0 draw against SD Ejea in the Segunda Division B Group 3.

Akil Watts continues to turn out for RCD Mallorca’s U19s, playing the full 90 minutes in a 4-0 win against Penya Arrabol. Another American outside back in Spain’s youth divisions, Patrick Cassagnol played every minute of IPC La Escuela’s 1-0 win against Valdefierro over the weekend.

Continuing to start for Barcelona’s Juvenil A side, Konrad de la Fuente went 73 minutes in a 1-0 win over Europa.

Continued success for Edwards

It was another start for Michael Edwards, who continues to cement himself in the Wolfsburg Under-19 side. The central defender played 90 minutes in a wild 5-2 win over Hamburg SV.

Fellow newcomer Alex Mendez improve his playing time this past weekend, coming off the bench at the half with SC Freiburg U19s trailing by a 2-0 score. His side came back to draw it 2-2 with two quick goals after the break but conceded a second half penalty to lose 3-2.

His team may have scored five goals, but an additional tally eluded Sebastian Soto over the weekend. Hannover Under-19s scored three times in the first half on the way to a 5-0 win against Niendorfer TSV.

Zyen Jones played 85 minutes as Schalke U19s drew 1-1 against Borussia Monchengladbach.

The Under-17 Bundesliga returns next weekend, and that means that it’ll be back to competitive action for U.S. U17 defender Mason Judge. Competing for Eintracht Frankfurt’s B-Junioren side, Judge started and went the full 90 min a 5-1 friendly win on Saturday against FC Kaiserslautern.

Vassilev continues with Under-23s

Aston Villa midfielder Indiana Vassilev picked up another start for the club’s Under-23 side on Monday. Villa fell 2-1 in the Premier League Cup matchup against Derby County’s U23s.

Back at Liverpool after a weeklong trip to Florida for U.S. Under-18 MNT camp, Matteo Ritaccio nearly provided the winning goal for LFC’s Under-18s. Coming into the game in the 76th minute, Ritaccio hit the crossbar in a 1-1 draw against Manchester United.

Wolverhampton Wanders U18 midfielder/defender Owen Otasowie is back and fully fit with the Premier League Academy. He made the start and played the full 90 minutes as Wolves drew 1-1 against Sunderland U18s.

Dest back with Jong Ajax

With his suspension over, Sergino Dest returned to the starting lineup for Jong Ajax in Monday’s clash against Roda JC. It was an easy win for the Amsterdam side, defeating Roda by a 5-1 score.

Also in the Netherlands, Stuart Ritchie made a start for FC Groningen’s Under-19s on Saturday. The defender helped keep a clean sheet, winning 1-0 against ADO Den Haag.
