TeamRank rankings criteria, points breakdown
December 15, 2010
The TeamRank™ National Championship is an effort to track the performance of club teams over the course of the entire season, from early August to late July. Points will accumulate throughout the season, culminating with the naming of Regional & National Champions in 12 age groups (6 boys and 6 girls)
Teams will be awarded points based on the following criteria:
Our goal with the new TeamRank™ points system is to take as much subjectivity out of the process as possible, while avoiding any entanglements regarding business contracts or favoritism regarding use of certain products. This is all about performance of teams on fields with an eye toward internationally-recognized soccer standards.
Accordingly, league play is given more weight than tournaments. In our country a team can play 52 tournaments in a year if it wants to. Doing that and winning a lot doesn't mean it is the best. Tournaments are also mostly about attrition - who is left standing at the end. A league tests a team over a period of time rather than over the course of a long weekend. You also get away from lineup changes, particularly via the phenomenon of guest players.
Some tournaments have better fields than others and we do try to take that into account. The point values for tournaments, whether they be "A" Level or "B" Level, are set for this season.
Even our best national and regional-level leagues feed into national championships, so it’s championships that receive our highest designations. We are not treating every event that calls itself a national championship in the same manner where points are concerned, and we feel confident the consensus of the soccer community is on our side.
USSF Developmental Academy teams have their own ranking. These rankings are a reflection of that competition's standings, with points per game and then playoffs determining national ranking.
Since overall points will be the determiner of national ranking, teams from certain regions may be stronger than others, and vice versa, during certain times of the year.

NOTES:
- We will include as many tournaments and leagues as we can. Please let us know ([email protected]) about information we are not including – points can be awarded retroactively.
- USSF Developmental Academy rankings are a reflection of that competition’s standings – and not based on our new points system.
