September 2, 2011

HUNTINGTON, W.Va. - Senior Kelsey Pichel(Rochester, Mich.) tallied her second goal of the season to propel the Ohio women's soccer team to a 1-0 win over Marshall at Sam Hood Field on Friday night. The triumph marked the first road victory of the season for the Bobcats.

Sophomore goalkeeper Mattie Liston(Lakewood, Ohio) earned her eighth career shutout and second clean sheet of the season. She matched a season-high with five saves, including three in the first half. Liston moved into sole possession of third place on the all-time shutout list after Friday's match.

Pichel got Ohio (2-2) on the board in the 24th minute. After a Marshall foul, she took the ensuing free kick and beat Thundering Herd goalkeeper Betsy Haugh. The tally held up as the game-winner, Pichel's first such goal of the year.

The Bobcats had a chance to grow the lead shortly after Pichel scored. With 20:54 to play in the opening stanza, junior Cathryn Rogers (Etobicoke, Ontario) and classmate Veronica Rock(North Royalton, Ohio) took shots 13 seconds apart. Rogers missed wide, while Rock's attempt deflected off the crossbar.

Marshall (1-3) applied pressure on the Ohio defense in the final two minutes of the first half. The Thundering Herd registered three shots and two on goal. Liston turned away the first shot off the foot of Chelsea Statler, while the defense helped with the second.

After an Angela DeSumma corner kick, Katie Ball directed a shot on frame that was forced out of bounds by the Bobcats' defense. A third shot missed wide left with 37 seconds remaining in the frame.

In the match, Marshall held a 23-11 edge in shots, but a much closer 7-6 advantage in shots on goal. The Thundering Herd took eight corner kicks, while Ohio earned one corner opportunity. With the win, the Bobcats improved to 9-1-1 all-time against the Herd.

The Green & White will wrap up a three-game road trip on Sunday afternoon at Cleveland State. Kickoff is set for 1 p.m.
