The Tulsa men’s soccer team battled back from a 2-0 halftime deficit, but 12^th-ranked SMU held on for a 3-2 win on Wednesday night at Westcott Field in Dallas, Texas.  TU fell to 6-6-2 on the season and 2-3-1 in American Athletic Conference play, while the Mustangs moved to 11-2-2 overall and 6-0 in the league.

 

“I thought we fought extremely hard tonight,” Head Coach Tom McIntosh said.  “After going down a goal in the first 23-seconds, we played pretty well.  Then they got a free kick, which is one of the top ways they score a goal, so it was disappointing to go down 2-0.  Then we got a red card in the 44^th minute so we had to play a man down in the final 46 minutes of the game.  In the second half, we gave up an early third goal, but with only 10 players we kept fighting and were able to get two goals back, but it was just too late.”

 

Stanton Garcia put SMU on the board with just 23-seconds ticked off the clock as he punched in a score from six yards out, and Idrissa Camara gave the Mustangs a two-goal cushion in the 35^th minute as he shot from 19 yards out into the bottom left corner.

 

Camara added another score in the 47^th minute, but Bradley Bourgeois got one back for the Golden Hurricane for his third goal on the year off a cross from Cole Poppen.

 

Geoffrey Dee pulled Tulsa to within one goal as he drilled in a penalty kick at the 89:49 mark, but with just 11 seconds left, TU couldn’t get a last-second score to tie the game.

 

Dee had a team-best six shots, five of which were on goal, while Kay Duit added three attempts, and Bourgeois, Cameron Drackett and Ray Saari had two shots each.  Jake McGuire logged all 90 minutes between the posts and picked up two saves.

 

Tulsa had a 19-16 lead in shots, including an 11-5 advantage in shots on goal, and a 6-3 lead in corner kicks.

 

TU will return to action on Saturday, October 24 against UConn in the final home game of the regular season.  The game is set to begin at 6:00 pm at the Hurricane Soccer and Track Stadium, and before the game the Hurricane will honor seniors Dillon Alexander and Bradley Bourgeois.
