#16 Cougars defeat Francis Marion
FLORENCE, SC – Freshman Meghan Cottingham scored three times to help lead 16th-ranked Columbus State University to an 11-1 win over Francis Marion University, Saturday afternoon (Oct. 14) in Peach Belt Conference women’s soccer action.
Francis Marion (4-7-0, 1-6-0) will play their final road match of the season on Wednesday at Georgia College with a 7 p.m. kickoff. The Patriots will celebrate Senior Day next Saturday (Oct. 21) at 5 p.m. when they entertain Georgia Southwestern State University.
Columbus State (10-1-0, 7-1-0), which advanced to the NCAA Division II national semifinals last year, outshot Francis Marion 27-5, and held a 13-1 advantage in corner kicks.
FMU senior Breanna Henderson accounted for the Patriot score when she headed in a corner kick off the foot of freshman Holly Bowman.
Francis Marion sophomore goalkeeper Micahla Kitchen compiled two saves in the opening 45 minutes, while junior Janine Gordon played the second half and posted four saves.
Three keepers played in goal for the Cougars, with freshman Bria Riancho earning the win with a scoreless opening half.
