#16 Midwestern State outlasts Jets in 2OTs
WICHITA, Kan. - Midwestern State's B.A. Catney banged in a header on the far post in the 110th minute to boost the 16th-ranked Mustangs past Newman (Kan.) 1-0 Friday night at Wilkins Field.
"In my 13 years as a coach at MSU, I've never seen anything like this," Midwestern coach Doug Elder said. "We hit the post a few times and they had 11 players in the box on every one of our corners."
And there were plenty of corner kicks for Midwestern State. Seventeen of them to exact as the Mustangs also piled up 35 total shots in what looked to be a mismatch. At least on the stat sheet.
But Newman junior goalkeeper Robin Allard just wouldn't let anything in.
"He made 15 saves and six of those were saves you'll make maybe twice a year," Elder said. "I had to go over and shake his hand. In my time at Midwestern, I've never seen a guy make so many saves. Good saves, too. So many were diving and sprawling."
The Mustangs also continued to flash stellar play on the back line by allowing just four shots forcing junior keeper Ray Clark into making a simple save to lock up his second clean sheet of the young season.
MSU peppered the Jets with 16 shots on frame as junior Griff Stratford working for eight shots while Catney and Andrew Power had five shots each.
Eventually, Catney and the Mustangs beat the clock on Bryan Santiago's well struck corner in the final minute.
"(Santiago) drove it pretty well to the back post," Elder said. Our bench did a really good job tonight. I was happy we handled some adversity and continued to fight. There was a time in overtime I thought maybe it wasn't meant to be but then we got our spark back."
Midwestern returns home to face Colorado State-Pueblo Sunday at the MSU Soccer Field. Kickoff is set for noon.
The Thunderwolves (2-1) claimed a 1-0 overtime result Friday at Eastern New Mexico.
"We're looking forward to coming back home on Sunday," Elder said. "We're hoping to have a huge crowd."
