#19 Pioneers Foil Warhawks in OT
UW-Platteville scored a goal in the fourth minute of overtime to defeat UW-Whitewater 1-0 Thursday at Fiskum Field in Whitewater. The match was the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference opener for both teams. The loss is the first ever for UW-W in the WIAC since the adoption of men's soccer in 2009. The Warhawks fall to 4-4-1 overall and 0-1-0 in the WIAC while Platteville, ranked 19th in the most recent NSCAA/Continental Tire NCAA Division III National Poll, improves to 11-1-1 and 1-0-0.
The match was played evenly throughout regulation with both teams having opportunities to score. UW-W fired off 17 shots in regulation to Platteville's 16. Each team's goalkeeper made several key saves in each half.
Logan Fye (Rockford, IL/Winnebago) had a great opportunity to score in overtime on a header, but Ian Christensen, UW-Platteville's goalkeeper, made the save.
Platteville turned the tables a minute and a half later and put the pressure on Warhawk goalkeeper Josh Rohde (Waukesha/Waukesha West). Brandon Chmiel, shot once and had it blocked back to him, shot again and had it deflected back to Mbodje Sarr who booted the ball past Rohde for the game winning goal.
Josh Rohde (Waukesha/Waukesha West) started in goal for UW-W for the first time this season and made three saves in the game.
There were 35 fouls and three yellow cards in the game. UW-W was whistled for 21 fouls and one yellow card.
The Warhawks will travel to UW-Superior and Finlandia University on October 6 and 7, respectively, for two more WIAC matches. UW-W returns home on October 10 for a game against Illinois Wesleyan University beginning at 7:30 pm at Fiskum Field in Whitewater.
