[8/9] Denver Tops Gonzaga, 2-1
Denver 2-1 Gonzaga (Shinyashiki 6’, Johnson 49’, Hanlin 53’ (pen))
DENVER – The [8/9] University of Denver men’s soccer team picked up its 25th-straight home result, defeating Gonzaga 2-1 on Monday night at CIBER Field at the University of Denver Soccer Stadium. DU’s home unbeaten streak is the longest active in the country, and the 15th-longest in NCAA history.
Freshman Andre Shinyashiki (Sao Paulo, Brazil) netted the opener in the fifth minute and junior Karsten Hanlin (Centennial, Colo.) converted from the spot in the 53rd minute for the Pioneers (9-0-2) on either side of an Alec Johnson leveler to defeat the visitors.
Shinyashiki’s goal was his fifth of the season, and his second on the trot in-front of the CIBER Field faithful. Sophomore Alex Underwood (Winnetka, Ill.) played a dangerous ball into the area that pinged off a couple defenders and fell to the feet of the Brazilian freshman. Shinyashiki quickly turned his mark and finished into the bottom left corner. Denver took that 1-0 lead into the locker room.
Gonzaga (5-5-1) picked-up a set piece goal in the 49th minute as Colton Cavey curled in ball from the left just outside the six yard box. Cavey’s service took just enough of a deflection off Johnson’s head to equalize quickly in the second half for the away side.
The Pioneers quickly put the pressure back on, as freshman Frank Carsonie (Hilliard, Ohio) got behind the Bulldogs backline and drew the stone-cold penalty as he was tripped up by trailing center back David Sigurdsson. Hanlin slotted home his first career penalty kick and the seventh goal of his career (third this season).
Redshirt-senior goalkeeper Dan Jackson (Chapel Hill, N.C.) made two saves in his ninth win as a Pioneer.
UP NEXT: The Pioneers hit the road to take on league leaders Oral Roberts on Oct. 10 at 6 p.m. MT.
