SCOUTING BROWN
Brown has alternated losses and wins to start the 2014 season, beginning the year with a 2-1 setback versus Siena. However, the Bears bounced back in their next match by winning at then-No. 23 Boston University, 1-0, on the strength of an 85th-minute goal from Tariq Akeel. The Bears then lost to Providence in overtime, 3-2, before emerging victorious over Lehigh, 2-1, two days later.
Akeel leads the Bears’ offense with two goals – one of nine Brown players with at least one point on the season and one of six different goal scorers. In net, Mitch Kupstas has started all five games, and over 453:47 minutes he has a goals-against average of 1.78 and a save percentage of.667.
A-SUN & NATIONAL LEADERS
While FGCU has yet to get its offense to finish consistently, it hasn’t been for a lack of opportunities as the Eagles are leading the Atlantic Sun Conference in shots with 90 for a per-game average of 15.0 – 1.5 better than any other team in the league. The Eagles’ defense has been the team’s hallmark to this juncture of the season as FGCU leads the A-Sun by only allowing four goals, and boasts a goals-against average of 0.62 over the year’s 580 minutes of action.
That 0.62 average is 36th in the nation, while goalkeeper Nathan Ingham (Keswick, Ontario/Keswick HS) leads the A-Sun in that category. Ingham also has a .857 save percentage which is tops among all A-Sun keepers and 27th-best in the country.
RECORD HOME SUPPORT
A crowd of 1,006 attended the FGCU-Washington game, marking the first time in program history that FGCU has played consecutive home games in front of more than 1,000 fans as on Sept. 6 against 2010 National Champion Akron there were a record 1,574 in attendance. The crowd brought the season attendance total over 4,000 (4,118) in just the fourth home contest of the year, which is already the third-most for an entire season in program history with still at least five home games remaining.
NEXT UP
FGCU will play a mid-week non-league tilt at FIU on Wednesday, Sept. 24, at 7 p.m. The match will serve as the pseudo finale to the non-league docket as the Eagles will then kick off A-Sun action the following Wednesday, Oct. 1, at Jacksonville. However, FGCU will still play three more non-conference matches throughout its league slate due in part to the departure of Mercer and ETSU to the Southern Conference. FGCU next returns home to host Stetson on Saturday, Oct. 4, at 7 p.m.
