@RazorbackSoccer Plays Ole Miss To A 1-1 Tie
OXFORD, Miss. – Sophomores Alexandra Fischer and Cameron Carter had solid performances as the Arkansas women’s soccer team earned a 1-1 double overtime draw at Ole Miss on Thursday night.
With the tie, Arkansas improves to 5-2-3 overall and 1-0-1 in conference play, while Ole Miss moves to 6-2-3 overall (1-0-2 SEC). The tie also helps the Razorbacks extend their unbeaten streak to four games.
Arkansas struck first in the 15th minute of the match. Freshman Nicole Ortega sent a pass to sophomore Claire Kelley, who changed direction to shake her defender and blasted a shot that was saved by the diving Ole Miss goalkeeper. In the scramble for the ball following the deflection, the ball found the feet of sophomore Alexandra Fischer, who knocked the ball into the back of the net for her fourth score of the season.
The Razorbacks survived a couple Ole Miss shot attempts in the 33rd minute. Sara Coleman found space and took a shot that sophomore goalkeeper Cameron Carter came off her line to save. The ball deflected off of Carter and found a streaking Addie Forbus. Forbus thought she had a great opportunity to score the equalizer, but sophomore Erika Miller stepped in and blocked the wide-open attempt.
The teams would battle over the last 12 minutes of the period, but Arkansas went into the locker room at the intermission with a 1-0 advantage.
At the half, the teams were tied in shots (7-7) and shots on goal (4-4), while the Razorbacks held an advantage in saves and the Rebels led in corners (3-1).
After a few solid chances to score, Ole Miss finally found a way to tie the match in the 69th minute. Gretchen Harknett took a deflected ball at the top of the box and struck it well, sending a high arcing shot into the goal that barely made it over the outstretched hands of Carter.
The goal came in a flurry of offensive pressure by the Rebels. Ole Misss looked to get a second shot off in a stretch of a little over a minute in the box, but the ball played by Jennifer Miller was deflected and skipped across the grass to the top of the box where Harknett was waiting. The sophomore settled and drilled the shot for the tying goal as the score held through two overtimes on the way to the third draw of the year for both teams.
At the end of regulation, the score remained 1-1 with both teams recording 12 shots for the night. The score held after the first overtime period with each team recording a shot, but neither team capitalizing with a golden goal.
Ole Miss looked to break the tie in the second overtime period, firing off three shots to the Razorbacks' one, but Carter made a pair of spectacular saves to keep the game knotted 1-1 at the end of the match.
Ole Miss was able to win the shot battle on Thursday night, as they finished the game with a 16 shots, seven on goal, while Arkansas posted 14, with six on goal. The Rebels collected six corners, while the Razorbacks tallied three.
Carter ended the game with six saves and was solid in goal for 110 minutes, while Ole Miss’ Kelly McCormick registered five saves on the night.
The Razorbacks will be back in action on Sunday, Sept. 28, as they travel to Baton Rouge, La. to face the Tigers of LSU. The match, which is set to begin at 3 p.m., will be broadcast live on the SEC Network.

On the game
“The work we put in tonight was excellent. There were some moments in and around the box that I thought we could’ve been a little better, and we usually are. If we are, we create enough chances to win tonight. Ole Miss is a very good team, so I am pleased with the performance. We will watch video, take what we did well, gain confidence, figure out a few things to work on and prepare for LSU.”
