Adelphi Gets First NE-10 Win, 4-1 over AIC
Garden City, N.Y. – The men's soccer team came away with a convincing 3-1 victory over the American International Yellow Jackets earlier this evening on Motamed field. Courtesy of two goals by Juan Aguiar, the Panthers earned their first tally in the win column in Northeast-10 action since joining the conference at the beginning of the season.
Aguiar went to work quickly after the first whistle, giving his team the early 1-0 lead after he capitalized on a mishandled ball by AIC in the 14th minute to gave him his first score in a Panther uniform. He was also part of the Brown and Gold's second goal in the 61st minute. He found teammate Diego Zuniga who streaked down the left side and put a shot right passed AIC keeper, Jason Ryan.
The visitors go on the board after a misplayed ball off of a corner wound up on the feet of Jason Burnusuz who managed to get a shot off in a sea of defenders and find the back of the net. However Aguiar, once again, took advantage of another Yellow Jacket miscue. Poor communication between the defense and goalie left the ball wide open in front of the net and allowed Aguiar to notch his second goal of the game.
Capping the fourth goal for the home team was sophomore Shane McLaughlin. With less than two minutes to play, he received a perfectly placed, textbook lob pass from Alejandro Penzini and beat the keeper in a one on one situation for the final score of the game.
Statistically, the Panthers out-shot their counterparts, 17-8 but were at a 6-4 corner disadvantage. Freshman keeper, Sergio Reyes recorded his second win of the year as he was credited with one save in the victory.
Coach's Thoughts on the Game
"It was great to get our first NE-10 Conference win," stated Head Coach Carlo Acquista. "I am proud of my team who completed the game and concentrated for the full 90 minutes tonight and completed the match."
