Aggies sweep weekend slate with 3-0 win
HILLSBORO, Ore. - Rachel Smith recorded her second goal of the season in the 47th minute to break a scoreless tie, Sienna Drizin also found the back of the net for the second time this season when she doubled UC Davis' lead in the 76th minute and Celina Minissian capped an already impressive Aggie effort by scoring her first goal of the year in Sunday's neutral-site match from Hillsborough Stadium in Hillsborough, Oregon, to help the Aggies defeat Eastern Washington, 2-0, and win both matches played throughout the team's inaugural road trip of the season.
By defeating the Eagles, women's soccer now possesses its first three-match streak since the 2011 season.
UC Davis will enter its upcoming three-match homestand, starting with Friday's 2 p.m. contest against North Dakota State, with a 3-1 record. Eastern Washington, which suffered its first loss of the season Sunday afternoon, now sports a 2-1-1 mark.
The Aggies dominated EWU throughout all 90 minutes and posted more than three times as many shots (13-4) and shots on goal (7-2) compared to the Eagles. UC Davis' defense imposed its will to such a degree, 56:21 of game time elapsed between EWU's first and second shots.
In her four shots faced, UC Davis goalkeeper Alexis Smith needed to make just one save to earn her second shutout in as many matches.
Women's soccer's scoring spree started in the second half when Smith scored her second goal of the weekend -- it was her strike two days ago that helped UC Davis defeat Portland State, on its own field, by a 1-0 score. After collecting Andi Damian'sperfectly placed pass, Smith immediately turned towards the net and fired a shot that sailed inside the left post from 18 yards out.
The score remained 1-0 for nearly 30 minutes until Drizin extended her team's cushion with just under 15 minutes remaining. This time, it was Haley Hughes who set up Drizin's chip-shot goal from seven yards out to help the Aggies pull away from the Eagles.
With less than five minutes remaining, Celina Minissian provided the perfect ending to an impressive weekend in Portland when she scored the Aggies' final goal, on her only shot taken throughout the day, from the top of the 18-yard box.
Including its upcoming homestand against North Dakota State (Friday), Denver (Sunday) and Nevada (9/11), UC Davis will not leave Northern California until early October since its next two road contests will take place at Pacific (9/13) and Stanford (9/17).
